General description

The Comptroller's office is seeking Accounts Examiner III positions in the Account Maintenance Division; Electronic Reporting Section. These positions do not require experience in the duties described below. We will prepare you for the role by pairing you with experienced staff for on-the-job training.

Candidates should be detail-oriented, able to work independently and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced processing environment. The ideal candidate will have knowledge in calculating tax, penalty, interest and refund amounts along with computer proficiency and strong verbal and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to work in a team environment, be adaptable to changing workplace demands and communicate effectively with internal and external customers and agency staff at all levels.

The Account Maintenance Division of the Texas Comptroller's office works to accurately and efficiently process applications, reports, refunds, bonds and license renewals for taxpayer accounts.

Electronic Reporting: Participates in the design & development of electronic reporting programs. Reviews taxpayer electronic reports and payment transactions for accuracy of computations, proper tax rate and correct payment information. Administers the sales tax Webfile program including system enhancements and taxpayer/agency personnel assistance. Administers EFT (electronic funds transfer) programs, including adding new taxes, identifying mandatory taxpayers, and resolving problems for taxpayer and agency personnel. Performs mathematical computations to determine tax, penalty and interest due. Documents an accurate record of taxpayer communications and actions. Responds to questions from taxpayers, tax practitioners and agency personnel via telephone and in writing.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's or bachelor's degree.
  • Two (2) years experience in accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem-solving issues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business
  • Experience in accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem-solving issues
  • Experience with Secretary of State and Texas Workforce Commission inquiry
  • Experience in Tax processing systems including ITS, TPR and AWM
  • Experience with franchise tax statues and reporting requirements
Substitutions

One (1) additional year of experience working in an accounting, finance or business dealing with analytical/problem solving issues may substitute for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education with a maximum of 120 semester hours (four years).

In this role you will:

Electronic Reporting Section:
  • Reviews taxpayer electronic reports and payment transactions for accuracy of computations, proper tax rate and correct payment information. Administers the sales tax WebFile program including system enhancements and taxpayer/agency personnel assistance.
  • Administers Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) programs, including adding new taxes, identifying mandatory taxpayers, and resolving problems for taxpayer and agency personnel.
  • Verifies validity of refund requests or overpayments and initiates the issuance of refunds. Identifies processing problems/errors and notifies supervisor.
  • Interprets tax statutes, rules and regulations to enforce electronic reporting and payment requirements.
  • Provides taxpayers and tax practitioners with information on electronic reporting and payment options.
  • Resolves taxpayer inquiries regarding electronic reporting and payment programs.
  • Receives and processes EDI (electronic data interchange) reports for sales tax, direct pay, crude oil, natural gas, motor fuels, and IFTA (International Fuels Tax Agreement).
  • Responds to questions from taxpayers, tax practitioners, vendors and agency personnel.


Employees are required to use their personal mobile phones as a part of 2 factor/multi factor authentication for accessing CPA systems securely. You will also receive critical/emergency calls/texts on your cell phone to ensure immediate communication.
