CNC Applications Engineer

CNC Applications Engineer

One of my best clients, a leading manufacturer of precision CNC manufacturing cutting tools, is looking for an experienced Manufacturing/Applications Engineer in manufacturing to travel 40-60% of the time, they dont work weekends or holidays and typically fall into 40-45 hours a week avg.

A bit about the company:

For over 40 years, they have been a leading producer of cutting machine tools worldwide, making top-of-the-line CNC machines, 5-axis, etc. They are recession-durable with global operations nationally and internationally. Great benefits and a culture you can build a career in successfully.

They are all about actual machine tool industry experience. Most of the Application Managers do not have degrees. But they have experience on a wide variety of CNC machines. Machinist competence.

They don't like to see machine shop managers for their application engineer roles. They need more of a setup and operator skill set and not so much programming.

Someone who knows how to make parts.

Someone who knows G code but not requiring a top-level skill needed there.

Someone who can run a machine. They don't program for their customers. Need to be familiar with the Esprix, Mastercam, power mill, or NX (Enough to be able to run a machine).

They don't want to see CNC programmers specifically.

The job:

  • Travel Weekly, install, and maintain great relationships with customers.
  • Deliver tailored customer consultations and guidance.  Basis for long-term relationships.
  • Provide technical support in person or over the phone for customers, sales, and trade shows for CNC Machines.
  • Assist with the design and fabrication, demos, test cuts, and turnkeys.
  • Define and troubleshoot complex manufacturing/machining processes.
  • Conduct time estimates for customer parts with a 10% tolerance.
  • Complete time studies and machine demonstrations per customer requirements.
  • Participate in training activities with senior colleagues, internal academy, and external resources.
  • Conduct time estimates for customer parts. Calculation of optimal speeds and feeds for part processing.
  • Generate CNC programs for parts processing, industry-standard CAM systems, and direct G-Code/ Macro programming.
  • Set up CNC machines with program, tooling, workpiece, and fixtures, including 5-axis and mill-turn. Set up and program a CMM.
  • Inspection of finished parts for quality and accuracy. Generate engineering reports and technical documentation. Frequent communication with internal technical staff, external customers, and external suppliers.

Requirements of the Manufacturing/Applications Engineer:

  • Degrees can be nice but not required. Experience with a variety of CNC Machine cutting tools desired.

Machinist competence:

  • Knowledge in part processing, metal cutting, CNC programming, reading drawings, and machine setup. Min 3 to 10 years of experience.
  • Experience in Mastercam, Fanuc, Siemens, Mitsubishi or similar, 5 axis CNC
  • Knowledge in part processing, metal cutting, CNC programming, reading drawings, and machine setup. Basic understanding of Metallurgy.
  • Proven experience in communicating professionally with internal and external customers.
