PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

The purpose of the Director of Pharmacy position is to provide strategic leadership, vision, and oversight for all pharmacy functions. The position has ultimate oversite of all pharmacy associates and is the pharmaceutical expert for the organization. The position will initiate, implement, and oversee all major pharmacy initiatives and actively works to control medication expense while improving the care of our patients.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duty 1: Provides strategic leadership, vision, and oversight for all pharmacy functions and all pharmacy associates.
  • Duty 2: Functions as the pharmacy expert for all committees, projects, contracts, and processes. The position is actively engaged in the pharmacy profession and attends state and national professional meetings. Is a member of pharmacy professional organizations.
  • Duty 3: Initiates, implements, and provides oversite for pharmacy cost savings initiatives within the organization. Leads organizational committees as needed to improve our overall financial situation.
  • Duty 4: Develops and manages the departmental budget to ensure fiscally responsible departments(s).
  • Duty 5: Promotes departmental quality and productivity using LEAN methodologies and performance improvement initiatives. The position is metric driven and uses benchmarks, analytics, and national best practices to drive results.
  • Duty 6: The position is involved in quality initiatives of the organization including the Joint Commission (JC), the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (BOP), the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and all other legal entities pertaining to the practice of pharmacy. The position ensures compliance with all laws and regulations related to these agencies and initiatives.
  • Duty 7: Understands all pharmacy inventory and purchasing functions and establishes processes that will reduce inventory, improve quality, and improve our overall financial success.
  • Duty 8: Understands all medication safety best practices and establishes processes that will reduce medication errors, improve quality, and improve the overall care to our patients. The position works to reduce potential drug diversion issues and follows up as needed on all identified risks.
  • Duty 9: Through regular meetings, provides coaching and mentoring for all departmental leadership associates. Encourages growth and development of these associates to enhance the professionalism required in the health care industry.
  • Duty 10: The position uses technology to automate pharmacy functions. Maintains a working knowledge of industry best practices and works towards alignment with those best practices. Understands the current pharmacy information system and can generate needed data from the system for analysis.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or Pharm D. in pharmacy
  • Active pharmacist license in the state of Ohio
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical skills including data analysis, Excel, LEAN, and project management
  • This individual must possess excellent negotiation and communication skills.
  • This individual must be able to collaborate effectively with other clinicians.
  • This individual must be an independent and motivated worker, able to demonstrate results.
  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in business administration or healthcare administration.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in a hospital setting with at least 5 years’ experience in a hospital pharmacy administration or management role.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
