Article 10.8 of the AWAAG CBA .Flex schedules and telecommuting optionsA formal AAG mentoring program that complements the AGO's inherently collegial and supportive environmentHealth and wellness programTraining and career development program that is recognized for its excellence and efficacy by AGOs nationwideThe Children, Youth, and Families Division (CYF) of the WA State Attorney General's Office has an immediate opening for an Assistant Attorney General (AAG) in its Program Advice and Litigation Section.This position presents an exciting opportunity for an attorney who is passionate about litigation, mentoring, and DCYF's programs to serve as the program litigation coordinator of the Children, Youth, and Families Division (CYF) of the AGO. In this role, an attorney with state and federal litigation experience will serve as lead or consulting attorney on cases that have programmatic challenges, are complex in subject matter, and frequently involve discovery issues. The program litigation coordinator will convene litigation and trial teams, coordinate and edit colleagues' pleadings and litigation-related documents, create section protocols and templates for litigation, and train and mentor colleagues. The types of cases assigned can vary and include contract, public records, civil rights, and system reform lawsuits. The work and responsibility of this division are of critical importance and have a significant impact on the families and children of our state.DutiesThe Section’s Work: This position will be a member of the CYF Program Advice and Litigation (PAL) section, which represents the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) headquarters staff. DCYF operates the state’s juvenile rehabilitation, child welfare and protection, foster care, and early learning and childcare programs. This section has several major areas of responsibility, which include: DCYF headquarters advice and representation; statewide juvenile litigation and appellate coordination; coordination of training for juvenile litigation AAGs; and policy support to the AGO when needed on child welfare, juvenile rehabilitation, and early learning issues. The section also handles appeals of termination of parental rights and dependency orders arising out of local cases, and consults on and edits appellate briefs for division colleagues and other divisions that represent DCYF.A typical workweek can vary, but it is anticipated that this AAG’s work will primarily consist of litigation-related tasks and coordination which may include preparing litigation documents for court, appearing at court as necessary, coordinating moot courts for arguments, coordinating discovery, negotiating with opposing counsel, reviewing and editing colleagues’ pleadings and litigation-related documents, creating section protocols and templates, and training and mentoring colleagues.The AAG will join a division and section with staff who are talented, compassionate, highly collegial, and dedicated to serving in an essential role in the protection of the State’s most vulnerable people. Members of the division and section are uniformly committed to creating a workplace that is cooperative, inclusive, and supportive of personal and professional growth. This full-time position is located in the Tumwater Attorney General’s Office and may involve occasional travel within the state.QualificationsIn addition to meeting the requirements to serve as an Assistant Attorney General, qualifications include:At least three years of litigation experience in state and federal courts;A strong desire to litigate;The ability to develop and carry out systemic approaches to litigation;Strong legal skills;Strong interpersonal skills for working with diverse personalities;Strong organizational and communication skills;Highly value teamwork, collaboration, and the support of a positive working environment that recognizes and respects all employees;A willingness and talent for contributing to a collegial and inclusive working environment; andThe ability to work with sophisticated clients who have responsibility for critical programs of statewide significance.Applicants must have graduated from a law school accredited by the ABA or completed the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program and be licensed to practice law in Washington State. (Applicants who meet the other stated qualifications and are actively pursuing admission will also be considered.) AAG salaries are set between $76,752 and $149,508. The exact amount is set in accordance with Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA.
