Summary:
The Endoscopy Technician works under the direction of a physician, department leadership, and/or registered nurse. Provides support to the Endoscopy department before, during and after procedures. The Endoscopy Technician is responsible for the maintenance and disinfecting of all endoscopic equipment. The Endoscopy Technician assists physicians with the technical components of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures as assigned. Duties are of a technical nature requiring specialized training and skill. The Endoscopy Technician demonstrates the ability to care for patients in the clinical setting. This role provides individualized patient care in a friendly compassionate, ethical manner, throughout pre-procedure, intra-procedure and post-procedure. Required Job Qualifications:
* Good communication skills * Time management * Familiarity with basic body mechanics * Flexibility with schedule to accommodate staffing needs * Ability to assist with patient transport * Assists with equipment transport * Work environment includes probability of exposure to adverse, hazardous, or unpleasant conditions * Routinely comes in contact with potentially infectious patients and specimens * High School or Equivalent (GED) * Basic CPR Certification
Preferred:
* Prior clinical training in endoscopy or surgical technician. * One year clinical experience in a patient care setting. * Knowledge of decontamination and reprocessing of all instrumentation used in assigned department according to regulatory agency requirements and standards set forth by professional organizations and institutional policies
Physical Demands:
* Ability to be standing or walking most of the designated shift. * Lifting or carrying objects 35-40 lbs. and supporting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs. * Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents. * The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter and retrieve data, and closely examine specimen, images or reports is required.
Responsibilities:
* Demonstrate accurate cleaning and disinfecting procedures for all endoscopes and accessory equipment * Adheres to Infection Control Guidelines when cleaning and disinfecting equipment. * Participates in all patient satisfaction initiatives. * Reports endoscopic equipment failure to supervisor. * Maintains equipment logs related to scope inventory, repairs and cleaning. * Participates in evaluation of new equipment. * Reports to Charge RN or designate for assignment of duties. Maintains a safe patient environment. * Sets priority of duties based on needs of patient and unit, under the direction of the RN. * Under the direction of the RN, participates in the implementation of plans for patient care. * Accurately obtains patient data. * Demonstrates aseptic technique, as appropriate. * Promptly reports changes in patient condition to the appropriate RN. * Assists Physicians & Nurses with various endoscopic procedures * Sets up procedure rooms including logging in to procedure documentation software. * Prepares the patient before the start of the procedure. * Assists with dilatations, polypectomies and obtaining tissue specimens. * Prepares and maintains endoscopic equipment during procedures * Assists with admission, discharge, and transport of patients. * Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as required. * Obtains supplies and equipment as necessary. * Competently utilizes technology. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of selected unit specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment. * Maintains an orderly, well equipped environment * Keeps procedure rooms orderly, according to unit routine. Independently orders, organizes, and restocks according to unit specifications. Replenishes procedure room supplies. Maintains emergency supplies. * Demonstrates a professional work style in interactions with internal and external customers. * Communicates all pertinent information to the appropriate team member. * Negotiates break time and communicates departure and return time per unit protocol. * Demonstrates initiative and self-direction in work habits. * Supports the Rush mission and values. * Continually improves personal skills to ensure the highest quality patient care.
