Description
This is important mechanical and supervisory work involving responsibility for maintaining light, medium and heavy construction motor vehicles and equipment in good working order at all times. Employees in this class have charge of a garage and supervise all garage employees. The work is performed under general supervision of the assigned supervisor(s) with wide leeway for planning work methods and assuming responsibility for final results. Repair jobs are outlined for mechanics and helpers and checked upon completion. A Shop Manager does related work as required.Examples of Duties
Has charge of the work of all types of mechanics and helpers maintaining equipment;Outlines assignments for mechanics and helpers and inspects work upon completion;Supervises and monitors the performance of clerical staff assigned to the garage operations;Instructs mechanics in the proper methods of repairing and adjusting equipment;Diagnoses equipment in need of repair, utilizing modern analysis equipment;Researches information on parts, supplies and trouble-shooting material;Communicates and coordinates with outside vendors for parts, supplies, services and repairs;Performs a wide variety of related duties in connection with the management of the repair shop;Operates various heavy equipment including rollers, loaders, backhoes, snowplows, water trucks, and other commercial motor vehicles;Assists in the preparation of equipment and vehicle bid specifications;Makes purchasing decisions and complies with County purchasing requirements and regulations;Keeps time, inspection, repair, maintenance and inventory records;Performs or assists in the repair/maintenance of departmental buildings, fuel station systems, HVAC/sewer/water systems; andPerforms other related duties as required.FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS : Thorough knowledge of current standard practices, terminology and tools of the automotive and allied mechanical trades; a high degree of skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery of the trade; ability to detect mechanical, electrical, computer, and gas/diesel engine troubles in automotive equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to plan, direct, supervise and accept responsibility for the work of others; ability to operate modern computer hardware and software; thoroughness; physical strength and agility; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.Typical Qualifications

Possession of an Associate's degree from a New York State or regionally accredited college in Automotive Service or Heavy Equipment Truck and Diesel Technology.General experience
Four years of full-time, paid experience in a related field.Supervisory experience
One year of the general experience described above must have been in a supervisory role for a group of subordinates.License/ Certification
Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Class A commercial driver's license with endorsement for tank.Certified as a New York State Motor Vehicle Inspector, Group 1 and Group 2.Other requirements

Supplemental Information
Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.Appropriate licensure, with necessary endorsements, must be maintained throughout employment.A driving record evidencing safe and responsible vehicle operation is required.Must authorize and execute any necessary releases to enable the appointing authority to verify licensure and driving history involving violations and/or crimes.Must acquire NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Underground Storage Tank Class A/B Operator certification within 6 months of appointment.PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT NOTICE:An individual who receives a provisional appointment must take the examination for the position title on the next occasion it is offered. In order to be eligible for a permanent appointment to the position, the provisional appointee must pass the exam and be ranked 1, 2, 3, or be tied in score with the individual ranked number 3 of those who are willing to accept appointment to the position. It should be understood that even if the provisional appointee is eligible for appointment, the employer may choose another candidate to fill the position on a permanent basis.
