Assistant Principal - Curriculum and Instruction

Purpose

The job of the Assistant Principal - Curriculum and Instruction administers school and District policies and regulations as needed, supervision of certificated and classified employees, student discipline, attendance monitoring, and managing specific school programs as assigned. The Assistant Principal will supervise classroom instruction and evaluate teaching performance for assigned curriculum area. The Assistant Principal will assist in creating a total school atmosphere conducive to optimum student progress and participate in the ongoing development and evaluation of the district's educational program. The Assistant Principal will be responsible for the overview of curriculum maps and lesson plans, design and deliver Professional Development to staff and serve as the campus testing coordinator for state and local testing.

Qualifications

Required

  1. Valid Arizona teaching and principal certificate.
  2. Master's degree in Education, Administration, or other related field.
  3. Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience at the secondary level.
  4. Minimum three (3) years of leadership experience.
  5. Valid AZ Department of Public Safety (DPS) Identity Verified Print (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  6. Expertise in curriculum and instructional strategies and development; student assessment development and analysis; and instructional technology.
  7. Demonstrated background in instructional leadership and ability to work collaboratively.
  8. Demonstrated leadership and ability to work effectively with various groups, individuals, and a demonstrated ability to organize ideas and present with clarity and conciseness.
  9. Knowledge of the school district and its departments, policies, and procedures, preferred.
  10. Knowledge of dropout intervention best practices that lead to connection to the school community and student success.
  11. Ability to assume responsibility, exercise sound judgment, and handle confidential material and information.

  1. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Essential Functions
  1. Report directly to the campus Principal.
  2. Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school.
  3. Serves as a principal in the absence of the regular principal as assigned.
  4. Administers and maintains discipline throughout the student body.
  5. Assists in the implementation of the District-approved program of instruction: Assists in creating a total school atmosphere conducive to optimum student progress, participating in the ongoing development and evaluation of the District's educational programs, assists in implementing effective guidance and health services for all students, and assists in interpreting data for program improvement.
  6. Responsible for personnel management functions of the school: assists in making recommendations regarding the selection of school personnel, assists in interviewing prospective teachers for assigned curriculum area, supervise classroom instruction and evaluates teaching performance for assigned curriculum area, supervise classified staff, evaluates achievement and placement of students in assigned curriculum area, coordinates Summer School program as needed, serves as member of the textbook selection committee for assigned area, assists in developing effective lines of communication and staff input in educational planning, prepares budget in assigned curriculum areas as directed by the principal.
  7. Participate in student study teams, 504 planning, and IEP process as needed.
  8. Monitors the academic achievement of students and makes recommendations for interventions or alternative placements.
  9. Responsible for general administrative functions such as maintaining accurate records and preparing reports.
  10. Assists with the management and implementation of computerized attendance, data management, scheduling, and grading system.
  11. Participate in the development of policies as a member of the administrative team and interpret school and District programs, policies, and procedures to students, staff, parents, and community.
  12. Assists in safety inspections and safety drill practice activities/safety plan preparation.
  13. Assisting in the development and maintenance of productive community relations.
  14. Assumes a leadership role in change and revitalization projects.
  15. Actively pursue professional growth activities for staff under their supervision. 16. Supervises campus, athletic events, and activities as assigned.
  16. Participates in coordination of Site testing.
  17. Assists with graduation activities and ceremonies.
  18. Participate in district departmental meetings for the purpose of developing a stronger department.
  19. Responsible for overseeing Professional Development: coach, manage, and develop campus staff to exceptional student achievement; coach and develop teachers to establish the foundations for successful classrooms: ambitious vision and goals, purposeful long-term plans and unit plans, rigorous assessments, strong relationships, and positive classroom cultures.
  20. Observe teachers weekly to gather data on student learning and teacher proficiency to diagnose teachers' strengths and weaknesses constantly and determine strategies for improving their practice and improving student learning.
  21. Provide a wide variety of learning opportunities for teachers focused on analyzing student work, effective planning, targeted and differentiated instruction, as well as high expectations for classroom culture and behavior.
  22. Serve on School Leadership Team; collaborate with team to determine school-wide professional development, curriculum and assessment needs to meet all school goals.
  23. Provide professional development to implement the TUHSD education program; assist with the development of and oversee the school's new staff orientation; assist teachers in the development and realization of Individual Professional Development Plans.
  24. Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the TUHSD education program.
  25. Provide data to inform the development of the school's strategic plan aligned with school and network goals.
  26. Use data systems to organize and analyze student achievement data; ensure the validity and reliability of student data by attending to the rigor and alignment of assessments.
  27. Use data to inform decision making, to develop and modify curriculum, and to develop targeted and differentiated instruction.
  28. Meet with teachers regularly to discuss data trends; problem solve with teachers to prioritize the teacher actions that will most impact student performance.
  29. Assist with the creation, completion, and presentation of school reports, as well as required reports for the district and charter authorizer.
  30. Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate teachers in accordance with TUHSD's overarching vision of excellent teaching.
  31. Collaborate with regional director of instruction, who supports school-based instructional roles, to learn about effective practices across the network, share best practices with other Assistant Principals of Curriculum and Instruction to use, and collaborate on group projects across the district.
  32. Determine the need for curricular materials, assessment materials, and instructional resources; communicate ordering needs with School Operations Manager.
  33. Attend all student hearings and MD meetings (SPED).
  34. Maintain the Student Procedures Handbook.
  35. Assist in extracurricular supervision.
  36. Oversees 21st Century Grant
  37. Oversees the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) on site.
  38. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working as an Administrator using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Working conditions may require work to be performed in both the field with extreme weather conditions and in an indoor environment with minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions. The employee will regularly work indoors. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. Travel between District campuses and to locations outside the District is required. The working hours are somewhat flexible as the job may require hours beyond normal business hours.

Board Policy Manual.
