Opportunity at a Glance
The Corporate Counsel is able to provide significant support to the Legal Team and the organization, specifically regarding employment and labor-related issues, and on other matters of critical importance. S/he has a broad substantive skill-set, plus the interpersonal strengths, resourcefulness and drive to handle directly the wide ranging routine legal needs of the Company's various businesses and functional departments. While the Corporate Counsel’s responsibilities primarily include serving as an employment law expert for Adtalem’s legal, Human Resources and business teams, additional experience in other legal practice areas, such as corporate, litigation, intellectual property, and/or insurance is a plus. S/he will report to the Associate General Counsel, Employment. Local candidates only please.
Responsibilities
- Interprets laws, rulings, and regulations and how they apply for Adtalem Global Education, Inc. and its institutions.
- Reviews and drafts employment related policies and procedures to support organizational and institutional goals, manage risk and provide guidance on periodic updates to same.
- Provides legal counsel and guidance to five Title IV institutions located in the United States and the Caribbean.
- Establishes positive relationships and works collaboratively with others to achieve desired objectives across Adtalem’s multiple entities, and is in a position to spot trends, opportunities for better practices, and provide insights and suggested solutions with key stakeholders.
- Provides advice to Human Resources, key functional partners, and business clients on employment law compliance issues (e.g., Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FLSA, FMLA).
- Partners with Human Resources and supervises and assists with the preparation of the organization’s response to agency charges filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and other state agencies.
- Reviews and drafts employment related agreements, such as independent contractor agreements, separation agreements, restrictive covenant agreements, and other corporate contracts.
- Assists with training on labor and employment compliance.
- Conducts research as needed to provide relevant advice to stakeholders.
- Proactively monitors legislation, regulations, and emerging trends in labor and employment law and in the higher ed industry.
- Supports and assists with internal employee investigations.
- Completes other projects and duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
- J. D. from an accredited law school required.
- 5+ years prior experience as an attorney practicing in a law firm or corporate in-house legal experience required.
- Litigation experience preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to quickly assess potential for risk and opportunity.
- Exemplary analytical and interpretation skills; strong legal research, writing, negotiation and organizational skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with clients at all levels of the organization, including senior management.
- Must be able to exercise sound judgment and work independently and efficiently under time pressures and deadlines in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
- Possesses strong work ethic and customer service orientation and ability to prioritize conflicting demands from multiple business clients.
In support of the pay transparency laws enacted across the country, the expected salary range for this position is between $100,171.61 and $181,034.70. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; geographic location; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
