BASIC JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Bus Driver shall be under the direct supervision of the Coordinator Maintenance/Operations/Transportation/designee and shall adhere to all applicable laws, rules and regulations of the state, county and the school district governing board. The Bus Driver shall be familiar and comply with all collective bargaining contracts pertinent to this position.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPromotes and functions in a team environment vital to organization success in support of the District transportation department.Drives a school bus safely on predetermined routes in accordance with time schedules, transporting students to and from school and on occasional educational or otherwise authorized trips.Escorts children across streets following district, state and federal procedures.Conducts required established safety and operational inspection of assigned bus(ses) daily.Maintains order and proper discipline of students/passengers; resolves disputes; documents and reports severe disciplinary cases.Documents and reports any needed mechanical repairs to assigned bus; cleans interior of bus and washes windshield and other windows; follows established safety procedures.Operates a two-way radio to maintain communication to and from Dispatcher's office and notifies Dispatcher of delays or changes that occur in scheduled routes.Maintains required records and reports, including, but not limited to, mileage, routing, maintenance, time schedules, time cards, and pre operation inspections check list.Assists with other routes when breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur.Administers first aid in emergencies.Drives a District passenger vehicle occasionally to transport students.Performs miscellaneous jobs such as sweeping and cleaning a bus and other grounds/maintenance/ custodial assignments if working outside of actual driving time.Maintains confidentiality concerning staff, students and their families.Maintains an acceptable attendance record.Provides input on Individual Education Plans (IEP) for transported Special Ed students as needed. Maintain confidentiality for IEP information.Maintains a clean, orderly work station.Willingness to update skills and knowledge commensurate with the demands of this position.Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.Ability to convey detailed spoken instructions accurately, loudly or quickly.Knowledge of safe driving practices.Knowledge of provisions of the California Vehicle Code, Administrative Code, and Education Code applicable to the operation of the vehicles in transporting students. CHP 82.7 - Standard Practices.Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.Ability to read and write English at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties.Ability to read and interpret road and street maps.Ability to establish and maintain proper conduct and safety of passengers on a school bus.Ability to be comfortable with students of multiple ethnicities and cultures, values, and students with behavioral and physical handicaps.Ability to operate a two-way radio.Ability to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while operating a school bus and to remain calm in emergency situations.When assigned to the special needs bus, have the physical stamina and stature to load, unload and secure wheelchair students and possess the skill to operate electric hydraulic lifts.Ability to pass the District job related test.Shall perform other job related duties as assigned on an equitable basis.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
WORKING CONDITIONSMust have the physical skills/abilities/faculties to allow the full operation of any type and size of school bus that may be operated for the transportation of pupils on scheduled or unscheduled routes, study trips or athletic events.Light to moderate physical effort for extended periods of time; frequent sitting or standing.Moderate to high stress level.Primarily school bus/vehicle, transportation office environment.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONSWork environment indoors and outdoors.Temperature - usually normal climate, occasional adverse weather and conditions.Chemical exposure - occasional: gasoline, oil, solvents, insecticides, herbicides, etc.CONTACTSDaily contact with students, parents, transportation department and District staff.Occasional contact with community members and outside agency personnel.Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health.
