Director, Payroll

The Director, Payroll is the face of the payroll department and is responsible for all aspects of the Payroll operation, including projects, performance to benchmarks, interface management, and all sub-processes. This role establishes strategic and collaborative methods while maintaining a strong financial control environment as well as establishing and maintaining Inova’s Payroll policies and procedures.
Job ResponsibilitiesOversees the timeliness and accuracy of all payroll processing and related payments.Develops and implements strategic guidelines, procedures, and processes.Establishes department goals and monitors the health of the payroll function through the creation and monitoring of reports and key performance indicators.Identifies opportunities to improve systems, workflow, and procedures. Works in collaboration with other departments and cross-functional teams to implement identified changes to improve processes.Develops and maintains relationships with senior leadership, customers, and other company departments to ensure positive interactions, resolutions, and outcomes of inquiries and issues.Directs activities to ensure systems and controls are in place as outlined in policy and procedure manuals. Meets established daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines.Ensures resolution of escalated internal and external customer issues, delegating to payroll team members, as appropriate.Directs the Payroll team’s activities to ensure compliance with accounting principles and local/state/federal regulations, while also adhering to Inova’s policies and procedures.Collaborates with other Accounting Department leaders to support the work of internal and external auditors by providing requested information, documentation, and analyses as needed.Responsible for calculation, remittance, timeliness, and accuracy of all payroll-related tax filings, including, but not limited to IRS Form W-2 and any other payroll-related filings.Serves as subject matter expert for the Payroll ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system and other related or interfacing systems. Assists with maintenance and upgrades to the payroll module of the financial system.
Minimum Requirements10 years of payroll experience within a large, distributed and/or complex company environment.3 years progressive leadership experience.Bachelors Degree Accounting, Finance or any related field.Preferred QualificationsExperience managing compliance, tax and payroll regulations for a multi-state organization.Experience with payroll in a healthcare/hospital environment.
