Mission or Goal of Unit: The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery aims to be a national leader in developing advances in the field of cardiothoracic surgery and training the next generation of surgeons in our ACGME-approved 3 year CT surgery training program. The thoracic surgery service is well supported by CT surgery fellows, general surgery residents and mid-level providers.
Chief Purpose of this position: VCU Health System and VCU School of Medicine are actively recruiting for a full-time board certified/board eligible general thoracic surgeon for the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. VCU Medical Center, a 700-bed quaternary teaching hospital is one of the largest and busiest academic centers in Virginia. We are seeking an academically focused surgeon with excellent training in minimally invasive techniques to join a well-established 4-surgeon practice. The division performs all aspects of general thoracic surgery at VCU Medical Center and McGuire VA Medical Center, one of the largest VA hospitals in the country. This includes VATS lobectomy/segmentectomy, robotic assisted VATS resection, advanced endobronchial procedures like EBUS, ENB and rigid bronchoscopy. This position is for a primary appointment at the VCU Medical Center. The medical center has a robust lung cancer-screening program and a weekly thoracic tumor board. The division also treats a large number of patients with benign and malignant esophageal diseases including MIE, GERD/paraesophageal hernia, POEM, EMR/stent/ablations etc. The health system has initiated a lung transplant program in recent months.
Position Responsibilities:
Teaching: The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities as part of their role in an academic medical center setting. Oversight of residents, fellows, and medical students as well as instruction in thoracic surgery will be expected.
Clinical: Clinical responsibility will be in the care of the thoracic patients at VCU Medical Center. Development of an active surgical practice with the support of division and department leadership is expected.
Research: The faculty member may participate in research activities and/or collaborate with others on research projects and endeavors.
Service: The faculty member will be expected to participate on departmental and/or university committees as necessary as well as in a professional capacity in their field.
Required Qualifications:
- Board certified/board eligible
- Minimum 3-5 years’ clinical experience in lung transplantation post fellowship
- Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
- Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will be facile in treating both pulmonary and esophageal diseases
- Interest and/or experience in lung transplantation and/or esophageal surgery will be highly regarded
- An active interest in research related to lung/esophageal disorders
