This is a remote in state position POSITION TITLE: IT DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR LOCATION: BANGOR ME REPORTS TO: MGR, IT ARCHITECTURE & DATA GOVERNANCE POSITION STATUS: EXEMPT, NON-BARGAINING UNIT The Database Administrator II (DBA II) will be responsible for the management and maintenance of databases that store critical data for business systems and analytics. Working closely with Data Engineers, Developers, and System Administrators, the DBA II will ensure databases are optimized for performance, availability, and security. This role involves setting up backup and recovery procedures, monitoring database performance, and implementing necessary security measures to protect sensitive data. The DBA II will also assist in the design and implementation of data models and schemas that support the efficient storage and retrieval of data for analysis. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Database Management and Maintenance: Manage and maintain all databases, ensuring high availability and reliability. Perform regular database backups and recovery procedures. Monitor database performance, tuning for optimization and efficiency. Data Architecture and Design: Participate in the design, development, and maintenance of scalable and efficient data pipelines and databases. Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data requirements and translate them into technical specifications and data models. Recommend appropriate data storage and processing technologies based on project requirements. Data Integration and ETL: Develop and implement Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to acquire, clean, and transform data from various sources into usable formats. Ensure data integrity, consistency, and quality throughout the ETL processes. Monitor and troubleshoot data integration workflows, identifying and resolving data-related issues and performance bottlenecks. Data Warehousing and Data Lake Management: Participate in the design, build, and maintenance of data warehouses and data lakes to support reporting, analytics, and business intelligence initiatives. Implement data partitioning, indexing, and optimization strategies to improve query performance and efficiency. Work with data consumers to understand their reporting and analysis requirements and provide appropriate data structures and schemas. Data Governance and Security: Adhere to and enforce data governance policies, standards, and regulations. Implement data security measures, including access controls, encryption, and data masking techniques. Monitor data usage and access patterns, identifying and mitigating potential data security risks. Performance Optimization and Scalability: Optimize data processes and infrastructure to improve performance, scalability, and reliability. Conduct performance tuning, query optimization, and indexing to enhance data retrieval and processing speed. Proactively identify and address system bottlenecks to ensure efficient data operations. Automation and Efficiency: Design, construct, implement, and maintain automated jobs and reports. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, business analysts, and IT systems analysts to understand their business requirements and provide data and custom application solutions. Collaboration and Communication: Communicate technical concepts and solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices related to database administration. System Administration (OS / Patching / DBMS): Manage the installation, configuration, and maintenance of database management systems (DBMS). Coordinate and Oversee OS-level patching and updates for database servers. Perform routine and advanced system maintenance and monitoring tasks. REQUIRED OR PREFERRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field. Proven experience (3-5 years) working as a Database Administrator or in a similar role. Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (e.g., Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL). Proficiency with core enterprise applications sitting in a UNIX and Windows environment. Proficiency in programming languages and Scripting such as Bash, PowerShell, Python. Nice to have Java, Python or R for data manipulation, visualizations, and analysis. Solid understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL principles. Experience or understanding of big data technologies and frameworks (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Kafka) and cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP). Knowledge of data governance, data security, and privacy practices. Familiarity with data visualization and reporting tools (e.g., Plotly, Tableau, Power BI) is a plus. Familiarity with computer networking, current systems software, protocols, and standards, especially routing/switching/security, Active Directory. Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Excellent technical architecture and technical support documentation skills. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively in cross-functional teams. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and tasks in a dynamic work environment. Travel for training and user group participation required. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Participate in after-hours call out for application support and engagement of Managed Service provider as required. Participate actively with related user groups.
