Description:The middle school principal is directly responsible to the superintendent of schools. The primary responsibility of the middle school principal is the improvement of the instruction, which involves teacher in-service, teacher evaluation and staff development. General responsibilities include administrative, supervisory, curriculum development and research activities. The majority of the principal's time shall be spent on improvement of curriculum and staff development. The middle school principal will also maintain cooperative relationships with various individuals and groups associated with the school and provide regular communication to parents, students and employed staff. Important in all of these activities is personal and professional growth. Many personnel functions requiring the principal's attention will be of a confidential nature.

Job Summary:

Provide leadership in the organization, administration and supervision of the building with the primary intention being the maintenance and improvement of instruction and student learning.Provide leadership for the adaptation of the general program approved for the school to meet the particular needs of the community served.Direct the activities of school certified and non-certified staff members in the performance of their duties.Identify staff needs and coordinate the recruitment, selection and assignment of certified and non-certified staff, and make recommendations for employment.Supervise and evaluate the instructional staff for the development and implementation of curriculum and improvement of instruction in cooperation with central office personnel.Provide necessary assistance to teachers in the improvement of instruction.Establish and maintain good relations and communication with students.Inform the appropriate central office administrative officers regarding the needs of the school with respect to personnel, equipment, supplies and curriculum.Publicize and interpret school programs and maintain rapport with the community.Participate in the development and administration of the school budget allocations.Administer a program for student personnel in the areas of discipline, attendance, guidance, counseling, special education and records.Implement Board policies, administrative rules and regulations, and Board/teacher agreements relating to the school.Supervise and evaluate all non-instructional staff assigned to the building.Supervise and evaluate staff in the area of student activities.Assume responsibility for the safety and maintenance of the school plant.Foster good interpersonal relations among students and staff.Keep abreast of trends, developments and research as they pertain to educational and school operation, and communicate information to staff.Involve teachers, students and parents in the decision-making process whenever possible.Develop the master schedule for the building.Conduct safety drills and inspections, and make appropriate recommendations.Supervise special education services within the building, conduct necessary staffings and cooperate with special education personnel within the district.Administer a system of accounting for all monies belonging to school, or to organizations, in accordance with procedures approved by the business office.Provide education leadership in the district-wide school program.Assume such other building or district-wide responsibilities as shall be assigned by the superintendent.Qualifications:

The middle school principal shall preferably have a Master's degree or Specialist's degree in educational administration, with specific preparation in elementary curriculum, supervision, psychology, personnel administration, school business management, educational testing and measurement, and behavioral sciences.The applicant shall hold an appropriate certificate and all other requirements of the Illinois State Board of Education.
