Description

The final salary will depend on the candidate's qualifications. Those with eight (8) years or more of required experience can expect offers up to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidates can consider their growth potential.Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects, and Communications and Maintenance.Reporting to the Chief Engineering Officer, the Associate Network Engineer works with senior engineers to install, maintain, and monitor the server and storage infrastructure; analyze service options, server environment configuration, and ongoing support requirements to improve system reliability while maintaining operation metrics; and coordinate equipment maintenance in accordance with current vendor support agreements.The primary duties include:Manage the Active Directory Database containing information on users, computers, servers, printers, etc., that work together to provide resources to the end user and system by creating, modifying, and deleting items based on communication and security needs. Provide level 1 and level 2 technical support in resolving network issues including troubleshooting network connectivity and server problems, updating device drivers, and updating and installing software applications. Install, configure, and maintain server hardware; update applications and apply patches; and back up and recover drivers. Monitor server environment for performance and capacity issues, document issues as they occur, and add or remove resources to ensure optimal performance. Monitor and maintain Storage Area Network (SAN) including applying patches, updating drivers, and allocating zoning and disk resources to servers.Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred, or any combination of education and work experience that equals four years in Information Technology infrastructure and networking services may be substituted for the required degree.In addition to #1 above, must have three years progressively responsible IT experience that includes one or more of the following: managing Microsoft network engineering (hardware and software); deploying current releases of Microsoft server software (application, database, email servers, etc.); monitoring, configuring, and/or deploying VMware virtualization technology; monitoring and maintaining backup and recovery systems; or, monitoring and managing large scale Storage Area Networks.Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory and associated services.Knowledge of VMware virtualization technology and associated software.Knowledge of backup/recovery systems including disaster recovery concepts for service and storage infrastructures for an enterprise environment.Knowledge of Storage Area Network environments.Proficient in configuring and utilizing monitoring tools to baseline performance and capacity.Proficient in administering current releases of Microsoft servers, Active Directory, as well as technologies that coincide with an Active Directory infrastructure.Skill assessing infrastructure problems and investigating, developing, and implementing solutions.Good analytical and organization skills with attention to detail.Good communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to multi-task, prioritize multiple objectives, and bring projects to completion.Ability to understand and carry out technical issues clearly and concisely.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.Must be able to operate a vehicle.Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county regionMust be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.Preferred :MCSE, VMware or CCNP certificationMetra employees in an active review period under the current discipline policy or who have documented attendance or performance issues will not be considered and/or selected for this position.Please note:
