Job Overview

Komatsu is seeking a Machine Autonomy Controls Engineer to join our innovative team at our new headquarters in Milwaukee, WI. This role will focus on developing and testing new autonomous designs for mining equipment such as shovels and drills. You will lead technical specifications, hardware integration, programming, testing, and documentation, working closely with a small, agile team to enhance the autonomy of large-scale mining equipment. This role offers significant creative freedom and a high degree of autonomy.

We are looking for a self-starter with a deep understanding of the product design lifecycle and software development, who can balance new product development with testing and simulation. A passion for continuous learning and tackling new challenges is essential, as the role involves working with cutting-edge technologies.

Key Job Responsibilities

Lead the design and integration of machine autonomy systems for mining equipment.

Develop and document technical specifications, programming, hardware selection, and testing procedures.

Conduct simulations and tests to validate autonomous functionality.

Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless system integration.

Explore emerging technologies and incorporate them into new designs.

Provide technical support and troubleshooting for machine autonomy systems.

Ensure clear and accurate engineering documentation throughout the product lifecycle.

Qualifications/Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, Robotics, Mechatronics, or related field).

Minimum of 3 years of experience in robotics, machine autonomy, controls, sensors, and programming. A Master’s degree with 1 year of experience will also be considered.

Proficiency in control architecture design and programming languages (LabVIEW, Python, C++, MATLAB, Simulink).

Experience in system integration and programming controls.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Self-motivated, creative, and high-energy with the ability to work independently.

Ability to travel up to 10% annually.

Preferred Skills

Experience with advanced sensors (RADAR, 3D LiDAR) and their integration.

Knowledge of kinematics and data analysis from field-collected machine data.

Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (RS232/422/485, TCP/IP, CANOpen, J1939, ProfiBus/ProfiNet, EtherCAT).

Experience with UI/UX development.

Background in installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and supporting autonomous technologies.
