Position Summary
The KQED Creative department creates experiences that amplify the KQED brand and elevate audience engagement by promoting our content, services and community partnerships. As a member of our team, the On-Call Senior Designer plays an essential role in supporting our KQED Creative team in developing and maintaining the KQED brand visual system and producing graphic assets to support KQED’s many programs and services. The ideal candidate will be an instrumental part of our team’s creative capacity while also having a stake in KQED’s mission to make a difference in the communities we serve.

KQED provide citizens of Northern California with a community-supported alternative to commercial media. We provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions; convene community dialogue; bring the arts to everyone and engage audiences to share their stories. We help students and teachers thrive in 21st-century classrooms, and take people of all ages on journeys of exploration- exposing them to new people, places and ideas.
This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters (https://www.kqed.org/campaign21) and working remotely. KQED requires employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
The successful candidate will be required to join National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET) Local 51.
Salary Information: $39.00-$56.00 per hour
Essential Functions
Understand and adhere to brand guidelines and complete projects according to benchmarks and deadlines
Design and produce branded print and digital collateral, which includes logos and brand systems, publications, signage, animated HTML5 ads, web banners, social media post graphics and more
Create video packaging elements, including motion graphics, illustrations and infographics
Support on-air television production by producing, managing and operating graphic components during live, in-studio, taping sessions
Design with Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and After Effects), Google Web Design and work with a wide variety of media
Collaborate with the Art Director and design team to develop design concepts for internal clients across departments
Work with the Art Director and design team to articulate and synthesize feedback to make appropriate changes and refinements
Assist with managing projects and production timelines
Supports interns on assigned projects
Candidate qualifications
Minimum 3-5 years of related experience as a designer in a graphic design environment
Bachelor’s Degree in visual design, graphic design, or equivalent from an accredited school
Strong design and production skills for video, print and digital platforms
Well-versed with pre-press preparations and the ability to create flawless mechanicals for print
Ability to manage multiple projects from concept to finish within limited timeframes
Must be a team player, capable of receiving and operationalizing direction from the Creative Director and Art Director, as well as collaborating with the KQED Creative team, stakeholders and clients.
Proficiency in the following graphics applications:
Current Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign; Illustrator; Photoshop; After Effects (familiarity with working in 3D environment in After Effects is required), Google Web Design
Candidates must provide a link to their portfolio and reel that demonstrates the following:
Strong design aesthetics
Logo and brand identity systems which include processes and iterations for one logo exploration
Motion graphics
Sensitivity to typography
Strong layout skills for multi-page publications and print collateral
The successful candidate will be required to join NABET Local 51
Knowledge/Experience Desired
Hand-rendered and vector-based illustration skills preferred
Cinema 4D or 3D related software
