University College

includes the Department of Health and Exercise Studies and the Department of Performing Arts and Technology, a new major in Music Technology, 12 minors and two certificate programs. In addition, University College includes undergraduate courses and curricula, academic enrichment, advising technology, university advising and the Exploratory Studies program. (HES) is to foster a supportive academic environment in which to educate and inspire students to build and sustain a healthy body and mind for lifelong productivity and wellbeing. HES offers a variety of both physical activity and lecture courses that fulfill GEP and minor curricula. As the sole provider of a key general education component, the department is uniquely situated as the only department in the university through which all undergraduate students must matriculate. Essential Job DutiesNC State University invites applications for the position of Department Head of Health and Exercise Studies Department to begin on January 1, 2025, with consideration of a start no later than July 1, 2025 for a highly qualified candidate. Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs with a secondary report to the Senior Associate Dean, the Department Head will provide visionary and innovative direction to the department and will promote a welcoming environment that promotes belonging for faculty, staff, and students, with a strong commitment to recruiting and retaining well-qualified faculty and direction of all academic, operational, and budgetary activities associated with departmental functions. The department head is a member of the senior leadership team for the division and for University College.

Duties include but are not limited to:

The department head is responsible for managing HR and personnel issues within the department in consultation with DASA Human Resources. This includes the annual evaluation of all direct reports, as well as the Statements of Faculty Responsibilities, assignment of courses, faculty, and course support.The department head is responsible for the sustainable financial management of the department in consultation with the Dean and Vice Chancellor, the Sr. Associate Dean, and DASA Finance.The department head represents and advocates for the department at the college, division and university levels, and actively works to ensure a welcoming environment that fosters belonging for all faculty, staff and students.The department head is responsible for ensuring that the department is aligned with college, division, and university policies and practices.The department head will supervise and mentor 25 full time faculty, direct curriculum development and campus/distance education course offerings. The department head is responsible for creating, charging, and appointing members to departmental committees; and making hiring, reappointment, promotion, and salary adjustment recommendations.The department head's responsibilities include teaching three courses per academic year, and department/discipline related research/creative work, as part of their administrative responsibilities.The department head will have active involvement in numerous collaborative projects across campus.The department head manages an annual budget for personnel/operations working closely with the Sr. Associate Dean.The department head works closely with the Executive Director of Wellness and Recreation on facility, field and equipment related issues, and alignment of policies as applicable. In addition, the department head works closely with the Department of Athletics as several athletic teams also use the facilities.

QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience

Requires doctoral degree, or other terminal degree (in disciplines such as, but not limited to, health promotion, health sciences, kinesiology and exercise science, physical education, exercise physiology, outdoor education, nutrition, parks, recreation, and tourism management, etc.)Eligible for appointment with tenure as associate or full professor in an academic department at NC State University.Minimum of 7 years of experience in teaching and administrative responsibilities at the collegiate level.

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).A demonstrated ability to work with faculty, staff and students to develop an environment that is diverse, equitable and inclusive.Demonstrated ability to collaborate, form partnerships, and work effectively as a member of a goal-oriented department and division.Demonstrated ability to mentor and facilitate growth experiences for faculty.Demonstrated experience with budget management.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience as a department head/chair at the college / university level or experience in supervisory / management position(s) in the academic arena, preferably at the collegiate level.Demonstrated understanding of issues facing various groups of college students.Demonstrated ability to use and understand data to inform strategic planning and decision making.Strong evidence of ability to set operational goals from strategic plans and lead direct reports to accomplish these strategic goals and initiatives.Experience developing majors, minors and related courses.Past experience in successfully managing change.
