A day in the life
The Director of IT Financial Management & VMO is responsible for overseeing IT financial operations, including managing the technology budget, tracking actual spending, and overseeing the Vendor Management Office. This role includes negotiating and managing technology contracts, while fostering relationships with IT vendors. The Director leads teams that handle both financial management and vendor relations within the IT department.
This position requires a leader with expertise in accounting, financial analysis, and reporting in a technology context. The individual will communicate effectively to explain IT expenses, recommend cost-saving measures, and manage key financial metrics for IT and other business leaders. The vendor management side of the role involves managing the full lifecycle of contracts, consulting with business owners, and collaborating with Legal, Risk Management, and IT Security. This position has a dotted line reporting relationship to the CTO.
Key responsibilities include:
IT Financial Management:
Collaborate with the CTO to develop strategic financial plans and propose cost-saving solutions.Guide IT leadership in financial decision-making and promote financial transparency.Develop and improve processes for managing the IT budget, forecasts, and spending analysis.Work closely with Accounting, Finance, and IT leadership to track spending, analyze variances, and report financial metrics.Ensure financial accountability for technology spending across multiple IT projects and cost centers.Build frameworks to track and report on financial performance, including project value measurements like ROI and NPV.
Influence stakeholders to adopt changes that enhance transparency and accountability in IT spending. IT Vendor Management:
Oversee contract renewals, negotiations, extensions, and terminations for all IT vendors.
Lead contract negotiations with major vendors and maintain strong vendor relationships.Educate internal teams on vendor management processes and provide regular reporting on vendor performance.Conduct Strategic Business Reviews with key vendors and ensure documentation of VMO processes is up to date.
Building blocks for success
Required:
10+ years of leadership experience in IT financial and vendor management across industries such as real estate and energy.Proven track record in IT financial management, including cost attribution frameworks and improving financial transparency.Expertise in IT Financial Management tools (e.g., Apptio) and financial software applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel, ERP systems).In-depth understanding of current accounting standards, tax laws, and corporate financial management.Extensive experience in vendor management, particularly in negotiating contracts with major technology providers (Salesforce, Microsoft, Oracle).Demonstrated expertise in leading complex vendor negotiations and handling a variety of technology contracts (COTS, SaaS, custom development).Strong critical thinking, analytical skills, and ability to guide stakeholders toward optimal outcomes.
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field.High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.Excellent communication and presentation abilities, fostering collaboration between IT leaders and business partners.Experience working in a global company, particularly in IT financial and vendor management
Hiring Salary Range of: $145,000-$200,000. Salary and whole compensation package (bonus target & LTI) to be determined by the candidate's location, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
