Job Summary of the Principal Mechanical CAD Designer :The Principal Mechanical CAD Designer supports Principal and Senior Engineers with the creation, maintenance, and efficiency of mechanical component designs, system level CAD models, and Components Off the Shelf (COTS) item modeling. This individual must have expert level CAD skills with experience modeling machine components, injection molded plastic, sheet metal, complex weldments, and utilizing toolbox and library functions. This individual works as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and must have the ability to think creatively, to solve problems and have a practical mechanical aptitude.
Position Qualifications of the Principal Mechanical CAD Designer :
Apply mechanical knowledge and engineering principles and practices to design and document various mechanical components and systemsApply a disciplined approach and best components and systems
Clean up of third-party models to reduce load timesMaintain mates and functional relationships across multiple configurationsMaintain data cardsAssign materials and manage the material library databaseUtilize toolbox components when possible/practicalMaintain the fidelity and functionality of large assemblies and configurations
Participate in product design activities, brainstorming, and concept development under the direction of principal engineersDevelop system level drawings and definitions for mechanical parts and systemsDevelop system designs, including actual CAD design of these systemsAssist engineering staff to develop specifications for various components and work with engineering staff to ensure products meet internal and customer requirements, identifying nonconformances and proactively works to identify possible solutionsEvaluate supplier specifications and compliance data to ensure a complete data package exists for COTS itemsAssists in troubleshooting issues with mechanical systems, which may include building mock-ups or conducting tests to further the designBuild, validate, and submit engineering change orders (ECO's) using SolidWorks PDM workflows and company PLM systemContribute to team growth by completing projects in a timely mannerInterface with and manage a group of remote CAD detailers and designersInterface with global team contributors on a scheduled basisAdhere to all company policies, processes, and proceduresAdhere to federal and state regulationsPerforms other duties as requested, directed, or assignedPredictable and reliable attendance
Position Qualifications of the Principal Mechanical CAD Designer:
A.D., or technical certificate in Mechanical Design, CAD Design, Engineering, or Engineering Technology field with a minimum of (15) years of experienceB.S. in engineering with minimum of (7) years of professional experience where significant CAD usage and expert knowledge can be demonstratedNon-degreed candidates, or those holding only a technical certificate, will be considered with a minimum (15) years of professional CAD use experience and a SolidWorks recognized certificate at professional level or higherExpert level experience with SolidWorks PDM and workflows, specifically:
Working with large assemblies > 3,000 individual teamsDesigning and detailing structural weldmentsDesigning and detailing sheet metalDeveloping and utilizing toolbox and design librariesDeveloping and maintaining multiple configurationsDeveloping and utilizing routing to design piping and electrical systems, including supportsDeveloping, utilizing, and controlling skeleton parts/sketches to define the interface/boundaries of multiple subsystems so the subsystem work can be dispersed throughout a large team of contributors without restricting the efficiency of the top-level assembly
Experience exchanging large amounts of CAD data with stakeholders using different CAD systems, reconciling data, and maintaining the master documentExperience leading remote CAD resourcesFamiliar with ANSI Y.14 drafting standardsProficient with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) principlesEffective communicator, capable of concisely presenting highly technical information to internal and external customers, as well as effectively communicating with suppliersFamiliar with the product design processSelf-motivated problem-solver who pays attention to detailsAbides by safety standards and protocols
