Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Nurse Anesthetist for the department of Anesthesiology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The primary purpose of the Nurse Anesthetist (Certified Registered) position is to administer anesthesia-related care in four general categories: (1) pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation, (2) anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence, (3) post-anesthesia care, and (4) peri-anesthetic and clinical support functions.Among the key duties of this position are the following:Performing and documenting a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient, including requesting consultations and diagnostic studies, selecting, obtaining, ordering or administering pre-anesthetic medications and fluids; and obtaining informed consent for anesthesia.Developing and implementing an anesthetic plan.Selecting and initiating the planned anesthetic technique which may include: general regional and local anesthesia and intravenous sedation/monitored anesthesia care (MAC).Selecting, obtaining or administering the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic, to maintain the patient’s physiologic homeostasis, and to correct abnormal responses to the anesthesia or surgery.Selecting, applying, or inserting appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for collecting and interpreting patient physiological data.Managing a patient’s airway and pulmonary status using endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy or extubation.Managing emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, ordering or administering medications, fluids, or ventilator support in order to maintain homeostasis, to provide relief from pain and anesthesia side effects, or to prevent or manage complications.Position Status

Full TimeThis position requires a fully on-site work arrangement.Minimum Education and Experience

Graduate of an accredited Nurse Anesthesia Education Program with a Master’s Degree in a related field; or graduation from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education programs prior to January 1998 is required.Certifications/Licenses

Applicants must have successfully completed the National Certification Examination to be a CRNA and maintain current certification.Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the State of New Jersey and current certification as a Nurse Anesthetist by the Council on Certification/recertification of Nurse anesthetists of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.Successful completion/certification in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidate must have sufficient sensory capacity to observe the patient and patient monitors.Candidate must be able to communicate effectively in both academic and health care settings.Must show evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work in teams and possess demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, and effectively function in the face of uncertainties inherent in clinical practice.Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands: Sensory skills adequate to perform a physical examination are required. Functional vision, hearing and tactile sensation must be adequate to observe a patient’s condition and to elicit information from computerized monitors, and through procedures regularly required in a physical examination, such as inspection, auscultation and palpation. Candidate must have sufficient motor function to execute movements reasonably required to provide care to patients, including the ability to help move or lift them. Candidate must be able to negotiate patient care environments and must be able to move between settings, such as clinic, classroom building and hospital with reasonable speed. Ability to sufficiently endure long periods of sitting, standing or moving is required.Work Environment: Candidate must be able to measure, calculate, reason, analyze and synthesize, both in quiet environments and in areas where distractions, noise and other stressors are present. In addition, candidates should be able to comprehend graphics displays of physiologic data, distinguish artifact on monitor displays, understand three dimensional relationships and the spatial relationships of structures. Candidate must be able to read and understand medical and nursing literature. Exposure to radiation, nitrous oxide, anesthetic agent(s) and/or infectious agents requiring the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Subject to unpredictable situations at times.Special Conditions

Ancillary privileges granted by the University Hospital Medical Staff must be successfully obtained upon hire.As of June 16, 2009, new graduates may be employed after obtaining a work permit letter as an Applicant Advanced Practice Nurse from the New Jersey board of Nursing under the condition that he/she successfully takes and passes the national certification Examination on the first available date following his/her graduation.Consideration will also be given to applicants who have not yet obtained the required degree, licenses and certification. Documentation of the degree, licenses and certification must be provided prior to the commencement of employment.Posting Details
