Job DescriptionThe O’Neal School seeks a highly qualified Middle School Division Head to lead the Middle School (grades 5 through 8). The major responsibility of the Middle School Division Head is to ensure all activities of the Middle School are aligned with the mission of The O’Neal School.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Have knowledge of, uphold, model, and communicate the mission of The O’Neal School.

Act as the educational leader of the Middle School, responsible for its day-to-day operation.

Direct the activities of Middle School instructional and non-instructional staff in the performance of their duties.

Articulate the division’s programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information to faculty, students, and parents as needed. Communicate regularly and effectively with faculty, staff, parents, and students.

Observe, supervise, and evaluate faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum. Facilitate and assist faculty and staff with professional growth.

Supervise the teaching process and review and evaluate academic programs.

Provide and maintain a safe and secure learning environment.

Create a shared vision with faculty and staff that places student learning at the core of the division.

Cultivate a professional, positive, and caring culture within the division.

Provide a physical environment which demonstrates the importance of learning for all members of the school community.

Work with faculty to ensure the implementation of an effective and forward-thinking instructional program.

Be aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of the school community and develop plans for meeting these needs.

Maintain budgets within the Middle School.

Meet regularly with the Head of School, other division heads, and school administrators.

Ensure compliance with legal requirements and educational standards.

Make recommendations to the Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of faculty.

Establish programs for the orientation of new teachers, for in-service training of all teachers, and for the evaluation of classroom teachers.

Strive for cooperation and diversity through tact, respect, and a recognition of individual differences and the special abilities and strengths of each teacher and student.

Oversee the coordination of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities within the Middle School. Assist in the planning and presentation of school assemblies and programs.

Establish guidelines for proper student conduct and dress; maintain student discipline consistent with school policies; monitor students’ adherence to established school rules; and maintain accurate student records. Oversee grading and reporting, as well as methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement.

Maintain a visible presence in all areas of the Middle School; work toward a resolution of all problems as they arise and keep the Head of School informed of the programs, activities, and challenges of the division.

Assign students to classes, and teachers to other duties such as pick-up and drop-off.

Serves as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching method, and general school procedures.

Assist in the admissions process for testing, interviewing, and evaluating applicants for enrollment.

Attend after extracurricular functions and maintain a presence at school events.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School.

Minimum Requirements

A Master’s degree.

Previous experience as an academic leader, preferably in independent schools and at the Middle School level.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills related to interactions with students, parents, and teachers.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Attention to detail, strong organization skills, collaborative, engaging, adaptive, and proactive.
