About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 millionin funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 300 employees

The Role:

Generate is seeking a highly creative and driven Senior Scientist to join the Library and Screening Innovation team in the department of Innovation and Data Generation at Scale (IDGS). This team works at the intersection of synthetic biology (DNA library design and ultra-HTP screening methodologies) and machine learning to establish truly novel biological and biochemical workflows that help enable massive-scale data generation. The ideal candidate has a proven track record in experimental synthetic biology, preferably in combination with computational modeling and/or statistical analysis. She/he will be driving the team’s efforts on the design and implementation of in vitro protein display technologies using cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) to accelerate the breadth and pace of data capture on vast protein libraries. The candidate must have experience designing, executing, and analyzing data for pooled screens. Expertise in technology development for pooled protein library studies is greatly preferred to simple implementation of existing methods. Experience with other protein display platforms, such as phage or yeast surface display (YSD), is also a plus. The candidate will work in a world-class environment for technology development and ideation. Close collaboration with members of Generate’s Protein Sciences, Therapeutic Area Research, and Machine Learning teams will be key to produce strategies to get maximally informative, quantitative data from our experiments. This is an opportunity to perform highly innovative technology development with considerable intellectual freedom, while being part of the collaborative and premier scientific environment of a well-funded biotech startup.

Here's how you will contribute:

Work closely with our internal CFPS Team on designing and implementing state-of-the art display technologies based on CFPS.

Deploy protein display technologies for screening purposes, assisting in experimental design and data analysis.

Work together with members of IDGS and other departments to help identify strategic opportunities for our uHTP platforms, such as microfluidics and automation.

Generate bold, creative, and unconventional ideas.

Present ideas and data, and incorporate feedback, within a cross-functional setting.

Support proposed experiments with theoretical analysis, modeling, and literature review.

Generate novel intellectual property and contribute to patent writing.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

PhD with 4+ years or BSc/MSc with 10+ years of experience in a relevant science/engineering field (physics, synthetic or systems biology, biomedical engineering, or related discipline).

Demonstrated expertise in the design and implementation of protein display technologies, in particular mRNA, ribosome display, or other in vitro technlogies.

Comfortable analyzing data using custom scripts in MatLab, Python, or similar programming language.

Have a solid quantitative mindset and a strong scientific intuition.

Demonstrated ability to design and execute applied biology projects.

Self-motivated and curious with a desire to learn from and teach others.

Who Will Love This Job:

Creative biologists who love building cutting-edge experimental platforms

Scientists who thrive working synergistically with computational biologists

Generate:Biomedicines is

committed to equal employment opportunity
