POSITION SUMMARYThis position works closely with the second Dean of Arts and Sciences to assure Arts and Sciences program quality and efficiency and to meet the enrollment targets and priorities established through the strategic planning process. The Dean of Arts and Sciences is the chief support and administrative position for programming in the areas of Math, English, Philosophy, and World Languages, and Library. The Dean maintains and upholds the College’s values of Respect and Inclusion, Integrity, Collaboration, Humor and Well-Being, Innovation, Quality and Sustainability. The Dean advances the academic vision and leadership required to achieve high standards of excellence in instruction and services with measurable outcomes for faculty, staff and students as they relate to academic planning, programming, and assessment. The Dean will incorporate a strategic and collaborative approach in the development of programs, faculty, and resource management, while working within budget parameters. The Dean builds relationships with internal and external stakeholders through the shared College vision, mission, and values and meets the needs of employers and students. This position requires flexibility which may include occasional evenings and weekends.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Recommend, design, develop, and implement policies, procedures, and initiatives related to the advancement and improvement of arts and sciences programs and courses to promote student success, while following relevant, local, state, and federal guidelines.
Provide leadership for the academic programs’ strategic planning activities to align with JJC’s Strategic Goals and Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Plan.
Provide leadership and managerial oversight of faculty and provide direct supervision to classified, professional exempt, and/or student work/work study students.
Lead diversity activities and initiatives as they pertain to recruitment and retention of faculty and staff within the Academic Affairs division.
Oversee the development, coordination and publication of the course schedules.
Maintain repository of adjunct instructors.
Participate in relevant community activities and initiatives.
Engage in professional development activities.
Facilitate the promotion, marketing and communications needed for the departments of the division.
Participate in state meetings such as IAI General Education and Major Panels.
Support college and career readiness programs.
Oversee the selection of full time and adjunct faculty.
Maintain an on-going divisional plan for adequate staff, equipment and facilities.
Develop, implement, and monitor annual operating budget of the division.
Manage approval of courses and faculty.
Promote the assessment of student outcomes.
Oversee the collection and dissemination of data needed for accreditation, grants, reports, proposals, and budgets.
Serve as representative of divisional concerns and needs.
Collaborate with the Grants Office in seeking external funds.
Supervise professional development activities.
Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree
Three (3) years of experience in academic administration.
Equivalent of five (5) years of teaching experience in a post-secondary setting.
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students.
Demonstrated excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Strategic capability and analytical skills.
Strong problem solving, judgement, and decision-making skills.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
Demonstrated commitment to the college’s core values.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Earned Doctorate.
Educational administrative and supervisory experience at department head level.
Teaching experience at a community college.
Experience with learning technologies and online courses.
English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
Demonstrated multicultural competence.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Normal office physical demands.
Ability to travel between campus locations.
Ability to travel in state and nationally.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Duties are performed indoors in the usual office environment.
