Project Engineer
Position Overview : The Project Engineer within the Renewable and Resilient Generation Support Organization is responsible for overseeing and managing Georgia Power Company’s (GPC) solar and Battery Energy Storage (BESS) generation facilities. This role involves collaboration with Southern Company Services (SCS) and entails comprehensive project oversight, ensuring successful project completion, and maintaining stakeholder communication.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Oversight : Represent GPC as the Owner’s Engineer, overseeing up to three projects, including both solar and BESS facilities.
Project Completion:
Manage the 65 MW Mossy Branch Battery Energy Storage system, including handoff to operations, budget tracking, project unitization, and ribbon-cutting coordination.
Leadership Communication:
Prepare and deliver project updates to leadership.
Scope, Budget, and Schedule Management:
Provide input on managing project scope, budget, schedule, and stakeholder interests.
Knowledge Expertise:
Serve as the GPC knowledge expert on assigned projects.
Regulatory Support:
Collaborate with SCS to respond to PSC data requests and regulatory filings.
Vendor and EPC Screening:
Participate with SCS in screening EPC bids and vendor qualifications.
Reporting:
Support PSC inquiries with written reports or presentations.
Training Coordination:
Work with SCS to support first responder training for disaster response.
Site Tours:
Lead or support project site tours for internal or external requests.
Media Coordination:
Review and provide input on media publications to ensure accuracy.
NERC Compliance:
Understand and support NERC compliance requirements.
Cybersecurity:
Ensure cybersecurity requirements are coordinated and compliant.
Project Development:
Potentially lead day-to-day development, design, and construction for GPC’s solar, battery, or DER projects.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required. Additional consideration for post-graduate degrees and/or industry certifications.
Experience Requirements:
At least three years of technical experience within Southern Company.
Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: power delivery, generation, I&C, cyber security, resource planning, TSS, transmission planning, construction, civil design, transmission substation or line design, distribution line design, protection and controls, test engineering, environmental, regulatory or renewable project development.
Experience in renewable energy and/or storage resource technologies is preferred but not required.
Contract review and negotiation experience for engineering, construction, and procurement contracts.
Ability to lead, motivate and influence others, regardless of the reporting relationship.
Demonstrated experience working across multiple organizations to achieve effective outcomes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Strong skills in the areas of project management, contract negotiations, verbal and written communications, analysis, and interpersonal relations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills to internal and external audiences required.
Strong problem solving/analytical skills and ability to anticipate and troubleshoot complex issues.
Knowledgeable or interested in learning the areas of state regulatory process, negotiation and management of contracts, generation planning and analysis, proForma financial analysis, and project management.
