Project Engineer – Renewable (Operations and Maintenance)
This position serves to fill a project engineer vacancy for the Renewable and Resilient Generation team.
JOB SUMMARY
The role of an engineer within the Renewable & Resilient Generation team encompasses critical responsibilities. Key aspects of the job are below:
Technical Support and long-term planning (BESS Storage, Solar, Microgrid, Distributed energy Resources and Backup assets)
This engineer provides technical support to the fleet, ensuring smooth operations and addressing any technical challenges.
They contribute to the development of long-term maintenance plans and budgets aimed at maintaining and enhancing equipment performance.
Project Management
As part of the Renewable and Resilient Project engineer role, they oversee both capital projects (such as infrastructure upgrades) and O&M project(s) (routine maintenance).
Help enhance and establish Operations and Maintenance procedures.
Manage contractor to support projects.
Design and recommendations.
The Engineer conducts in depth analyses to develop design options or recommendations related to structures, systems, and components.
Whether it is optimizing existing equipment or proposing innovative designs, their expertise contributes to fleet efficiency and reliability.
Technical direction and Troubleshooting
This position plays a crucial role in providing technical direction to address challenges faced by site systems.
Troubleshooting issues, diagnosing problems, and implementing effective solutions are part of their responsibilities.
Fleet Initiatives, Research and Development and Upgrades
The engineer actively supports fleet wide initiatives, which may include design modifications, upgrades, or performance improvements.
Technical resource for Operations and Maintenance
As a technical resource, they assist Operations and Maintenance teams.
Whether it is training, troubleshooting, or providing expertise, their knowledge benefits day to day operations.
Continuous Learning
As a Project engineer, you will be introduced to new technologies such as: BESS, DERs, Resiliency Backup projects, Micro Grids, Solar plus Battery Storage, etc.
Also, will receive hands-on experience as these technologies become commercial.
In summary, this engineer’s role is pivotal in ensuring the Renewable & Resilient Generation operates efficiently, adapts to changing needs, and maintains high performance standards.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide site/project management, long term maintenance strategies and technical support to the Renewable and Resilient Fleet.
Provide Technical Support for Operations and Maintenance. Engage Team leaders, site tech, etc.
Track system performance and provide solutions where needed, and manage KPIs for the Fleet (Inverter Availability, Performance Ratio, etc.).
Support R&R Fleet for budgets development (Annual, 5yr, etc.), tracking budget spend, provide monthly projections, and budget variance explanation to the financial department.
Utilize work management tools (Oracle, Maximo, etc.) and other technical tasks such as: Root Cause Analyses (RCAs), Plant Review Board Process (PRB).
Actively support sites and work with teammates to ensure improved safety, compliance, and reliability.
Support new develop sites and the transition to Operations (PM in place, spare parts ordered, LOTO setup, etc.) (when needed).
Provide support for Cyber Security compliance.
Partner with Industrial, intercompany, and OE&M partners to stay current of any upgrades or concerns that affect the plant and communicate these needs to plant management, corporate management, and peer groups.
Attend Industry conference and meeting to ensure continued efficient operations.
Ensure effective communication and coordination occurs with all support resources, contractors, vendors, and all plant stakeholders such as Operations & Maintenance, etc.
Be a presence in our fleet and build relationships.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
B.S. in Engineering from an ABET accredited program/institution is required.
B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering preferred, but willing to consider other engineering disciplines.
M.S. in Business or Engineering a plus.
Professional Engineer (PE) license would also be a plus.
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification would be a plus.
Experience
At least three to five years of technical experience within Southern Company or Industrial experience.
Experience in at least one of the following areas is required: power delivery, power generation, I&C, cyber security, environmental, regulatory, and renewable project development, or construction.
Experience in renewable energy and/or storage resource technologies is preferred but not required.
Demonstrated experience working across multiple organizations to achieve effective outcomes.
Demonstrated experience in:
coordinating, planning, and budgeting of capital and O&M projects.
Demonstrated experience with work management process.
Experience in an industrial utility environment (preferably supporting Operating and Maintenance).
Demonstrated project management experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong organizational, administrative, time management, project management (a plus), facilitation and analytical skills are required.
Knowledge and experience with personal computers and the ability to learn numerous software applications quickly.
Self-motivation and demonstrated initiative are crucial for this position.
