The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Academic Counselor to join their team.
The UW Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) headquarters research and education that aims to solve problems and critical challenges of the 21st century — from combating the climate crisis and natural hazards to designing solutions that support an equitable future. To improve people’s lives, CEE prepares students with the skills and leadership abilities needed to design, build, and maintain solutions that increase resilience and sustainability in the built and natural environments. Comprised of 50 faculty, 45 staff and 700 students, the CEE department welcomes and values people of all backgrounds, who offer a range of perspectives and life experiences.
This position works closely with the Academic Counselor - Lead, Program Coordinator, and the Student and Academic Services (SAS) team to provide academic advising and guidance for prospective and current undergraduate students in Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE). The role involves delivering direct service to students both in person and electronically, responding to general inquiries, and supporting various departmental activities, including events and student organizations. Additionally, the position includes assisting with ABET support.
As a key member of the department’s Student and Academic Services team, this role contributes to the development, planning, and implementation of activities and services that support students and the department’s academic mission. Responsibilities encompass a full range of tasks such as admissions, orientation, graduation, student progress monitoring, outreach, communication, and operational duties like time schedule and enrollment management. The position also serves as the primary liaison for coordination with the department’s student organizations.
The role involves coordinating and representing the CEE Department in university and college activities, such as registration labs, special events, Dawg Days, and college fairs. The position requires broad knowledge of the department’s programs and offerings to assist a diverse range of individuals, including prospective students, industry professionals, and community members.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESIn coordination with the Academic Counselor-Lead, provide academic advising and direct service to current and prospective undergraduate students, in person as well as electronically, through web inquires, email lists, and web communication.
Interpret departmental, college, and university policies and procedures. Represent the department at fairs, outreach activities, academic events and CEE representation on university and college level committees, including the Direct to College Placement Coordinating Committee.
With SAS Team, provide administrative and operational oversight for department’s academic activities, such as monitoring CEE Time Schedule, add codes requests, enrollment management, data gathering, outreach, ABET and degree audit coding.
Support SAS activities and departmental programming, working in collaboration with faculty, student organizations, alumni and industry representatives as appropriate.
Collaborate in the development, planning, and implementation of programs, events, and processes.
Programming and events include, but are not limited to admissions, new student orientation, special events for students, CEE Career Fair, and the CEE Graduation Celebration.
Serve as staff liaison for departmental student organizations and activities to address matters that require departmental input and oversight. This includes, but is not limited to, activities associated with competition teams, travel, materials acquisition, and liability management.
Assist with the development and monitoring of print and online communication, such as Advising Handbook, web content, and social media communication.
Maintain departmental data, statistics and ABET information.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Education, or related field
Two years’ experience working in higher education with students from diverse backgrounds.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Strong organizational skills and event planning experience.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with international constituency (faculty, staff, students, and institutional officers).
