The Allen School has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Adviser.

The Academic Adviser will function as part of the undergraduate advising team and provide academic counseling to students interested in majoring in Computer Science & Computer Engineering at the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. This position is a member of the highly collaborative and innovative Allen School Advising team, which has 7 full-time staff members and supports 2200 undergraduate students. 34% of our undergraduate students are women and 10% are underrepresented minority students. Additionally 20% of our undergraduate are Pell-eligible and 24% of students will be the first in their family to obtain a four-year degree.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct Advising & Student ServicesProvide academic counseling to students both considering, applying to, and majoring in Computer Science and Computer Engineering within the Allen School

Manage caseload of current Allen School students for satisfactory progress and general academic advising

Support Allen School students by developing relevant programming and activities

Cultivate and maintain an environment where BIPOC and marginalized students feel their voices are centered, their experiences legitimized, and they have an ally and advocate should difficult situations arise.

Communication and collaborate with the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity and other co-curricular diversity and inclusion programs across campus, and well as the Allen School Diversity & Access Team.

Advise prospective students on pre-major courses, requirements to apply to the school, and answer questions about the competitive admissions process

Counsel and assist students experiencing academic difficulty or personal crises regarding options and resources. Refer students as necessary to appropriate UW or community resources.

Present regular information sessions for prospective students

Possible supervision of one or more Allen School student groups

Interpret University and School policies and regulations to students, faculty, and staff.

These responsibilities may change consistent with business needs.

Admissions

Assist in screening applicants and participate in admissions committee decisions

Advise and redirect students denied admission to the school

Administrative Duties

Ensure that paper and electronic documents pertinent to the Allen School undergraduate programs (including brochures, web material, online forms, etc.) are kept up to date

Keep informed of University, College of Arts & Sciences, and College of Engineering policies

Respond to faculty/staff inquiries regarding undergraduate programs

Help maintain advising database and school website

Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of Advising, Student Counseling or Teaching experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

We need a collaborative teammate. You receive feedback with thoughtfulness and reflection and you give feedback with kindness and consideration.

We need a direct communicator. You are vocal about doing the right thing, you surface issues as soon as you see them and you are comfortable with having straightforward conversations.

We are a modern STEM department. We need our team members to be proficient with computers, including experience working with databases, Microsoft Office, Google’s suite of tools, Slack, etc.

Strong written communication for professional workplace settings. You are a wizard with email because you're able to cut through confusion or diffuse any sticky situation with clear and concise written words.

Engaging Presenter. You can take dry, dense information and transform it into a captivating presentation that can be easily consumed by a college audience.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Familiarity with University student related policies and procedures

Experience with University student database systems

Experience authoring web pages using HTML

CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT

This position may be required to work an irregular work week (including evenings and weekends) to organize and participate in events
