Job Title: Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Special Victim’s Child Abuse UnitGENERAL SUMMARYThe Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is seeking highly motivated and qualified attorneys for the Special Victim’s Child Abuse Unit. This unit is tasked with the important responsibility of prosecuting crimes committed against society’s most vulnerable victims, OUR CHILDREN. APAs assigned to this unit are responsible for the vertical prosecution of Child Abuse cases involving sexual abuse of children under the age of 16, physical abuse of children under the age of 15, gun-related crimes involving children and child death cases where the parents, guardians or caretakers are deemed responsible. These cases are often complex, challenging and highly visible in the media. Under supervision, APAs conduct warrant reviews, make charging decisions, hold preliminary exams in district courts, file and respond to motions, and prosecute offenders in criminal bench and jury trials. Qualified APAs in this unit must communicate effectively, professionally, and tactfully with victims, their families, witnesses, medical personnel, law enforcement officers, court personnel and defense attorneys.COMPENSATION:
Compensation is commensurate with experience. Full medical benefits, as well as a retirement plan with robust time off, compensatory time, paid parental leave, etc., with annual step increases.QUALIFICATIONS:
Juris Doctorate Degree; must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan; should possess effective oral/written communication skills; should be organized and extremely motivated. Familiarity with Prosecutor by Karpel case management system and Training in Forensic Interview Protocols is preferred but not required.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Review criminal warrants and investigative case files submitted by law enforcement.Interact with and interview child victims, parents/guardians, witnesses, medical personnel and law enforcement officers.Attending Kids Talk interviews when necessary.Review search warrants and conduct investigative subpoenas when needed.Determine appropriate criminal charges and authorize criminal warrants.Vertically prosecute complex, challenging and/or high visibility child abuse cases.Provide zealous and effective advocacy on behalf of the People of the State of Michigan.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
