Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Research Scientist to join the Discovery Sciences and Technologies (DST) Department and contribute to our biochemistry and cell biology capabilities to enable the identification and nomination of small molecule and biologics drug candidates across all therapeutic areas at Gilead.

DST Department members are responsible for the design and execution of rigorous, quantitative, and physiologically relevant

in vitro

biochemical and functional cellular assays. They collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams to discover and evolve drug candidates from lead identification efforts during project inception to the characterization of the final development candidate.

The successful candidate will be an integral member of the DST research team and work closely with various Research functions such as medicinal chemistry, structural biology and protein therapeutics to advance transformational therapies into clinical development for patients. Gilead is a highly matrixed organization and the ability to work effectively across diverse functional groups and therapeutic areas is a key attribute for this role.

Specific Responsibilities:

Design and implement robust biochemical and cellular functional assays to measure and characterize the in vitro pharmacological properties of drug candidates.

Conduct automation-enabled medium to high-throughput experiments to identify hit molecules and support lead optimization across various therapeutic modalities.

Utilize in vitro pharmacology techniques to elucidate the mechanisms of action of drug candidates, focusing on drug-target interactions and associated cellular signaling pathways.

Provide translational biological evidence to support the progression of drug candidates toward clinical investigation.

Deliver scientific insights and detailed data interpretations to inform decision-making processes at both the project team and leadership levels.

Apply chemical biology and CRISPR-based genomic screening tools to deepen understanding of disease pathology and contribute to novel target validation efforts as needed.

Assess and integrate new discovery technologies to advance internal programs and core group functions.

Potentially mentor associates by providing scientific direction and guidance.

Contribute to multiple projects concurrently, work effectively within cross-functional teams, and communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

BA/BS with 8 years’ experience or MA/MS with 6 years’ experience or PhD with 0-2 years’ experience

Ph.D. in Immunology, Cell Biology, or a related scientific field preferred

2+ years of postdoctoral research experience, demonstrated by relevant publications.

Deep knowledge and research experience in one or more of the following fields: Immunology, Oncology, or Virology

Proficiency in cell line engineering, primary cell culture, immunophenotyping and cell signaling study

Proficiency in functional assay development and various assay readout technologies

Experience with chemical or genetic perturbation techniques to investigate cellular phenotypes, drug pharmacology, and mechanisms of action (MOA) using high-dimensional readouts such as single-cell RNA sequencing or high-content imaging

Strong data processing and analysis skills; Familiarity with R or Python for data analysis is a plus

Excellent experimental design and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to meticulously document laboratory procedures and experiments. Ability to multitask effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced research environment.

Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across disciplines.
