The Business Development and Alliance Manager, Office of Strategic Alliances develops and implements new strategic alliances and business development initiatives for the UCSF research enterprise and health system. Identifies, investigates, and analyzes possible strategic partnerships independently or in coordination with others. Manages ongoing agreements, consortiums, and/or alliances to maximize the value of the relationship for the organization. Provides input on business opportunities with external parties, including programmatic campus initiatives, research projects, aspects of intellectual property (IP), and technology-related issues.

Supports and coordinates with other business development professionals in the Office of Strategic Alliances. This includes improving workflow and coordination by leveraging appropriate tools.

This Business Development and Alliance Manager also works closely with teams in Innovation Ventures to monitor and assure relevant contractual and IP obligations and milestones are met, and to maintain an overall healthy collaborative environment for the program team, including facilitation of disputes and fostering transparency and communication between stakeholders at UCSF and partners. The incumbent will coordinate projects with principal investigators, research service analysts, and the industry contract group on all pre and post-award contracts and agreements, coordinate and run joint steering committee functions, budget and project tracking, and organize symposia and meetings.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related life sciences field and/or equivalent health-related work experience/training

Three (3) or more years of related work experience

Two (2) years of experience working in an academic environment, health science organization, or biotechnology company

Demonstrated leadership experience working within the research environment at a major university or institute or private industry; and ability to work with a variety of public institutions and the capacity to produce creative and innovative solutions and approaches to common problems

High-level interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with diverse stakeholders in all parts of the organization and ability to reach out to various constituents

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to understand the varying objectives and needs of faculty and industry sponsors

Ability to market technology to industrial partners

Ability to analyze complex technical data using logic and quantitative reasoning

Thorough knowledge of science

Knowledge of legal/policy, including entrepreneurship, intellectual property, confidentiality, conflict-of-interest, equity positions, indemnification, insurance, and public relations

Thorough knowledge of and application of standard principles, theories, and concepts and techniques such as laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to the protection and management of intellectual property, university technology transfer, and general scientific and/or technical skills in subject matter area

Ability to work with a variety of database systems; spreadsheets; reporting systems and electronic document management systems

Ability to effectively coordinate interdisciplinary project teams in a fast environment and multiple competing deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

MA/MS in Biological Sciences

PhD in Biological Sciences, MBA, and/or JD

Knowledge of contracts and grants
