Company Description

Sustainable Renton is a Renton-based volunteer-driven non-profit organization dedicated to creating a more equitable and sustainable future. Our mission is to promote healthy living, raise environmental awareness, and ensure access to basic needs for everyone in our community.

We are a passionate group of volunteers who have come together with the hope of leaving our home better than we found it! We're not afraid to get our hands dirty. We love and accept members from all walks of life and work to foster an individual's passions who would like to make a difference under the support of our group!

Over the past 10 years, we have stewarded sustainable growing practices at our Community Farm and Food Forest. We have also been integral to food justice work in and around Renton since 2019 and work to ensure good food isn't wasted and can provide hunger relief to those in our surrounding communities.

Role Description

This is a hybrid contract role for a Non-profit Executive Director at Sustainable Renton. The Executive Director will be will be the primary leader responsible for overseeing the operations, programs, and strategic direction of Sustainable Renton. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will be responsible for the overall management of the organization, ensuring its financial stability, program effectiveness, and community impact.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with a passion for sustainability and social justice, excellent leadership and management skills, and the ability to inspire and engage a diverse range of stakeholders.

As we are a small non-profit, this position will start out as a part-time position (15 hours/week) with an opportunity for growth with future funding.

Expectations listed below are based on a 40hr work week job description and will be adjusted to fit within the part-time schedule. Certain responsibilities can be shared with other Board members at this time.

Key Responsibilities

Executive Leadership and Strategy:

Provide visionary and inclusive leadership to advance Sustainable Renton’s mission and ensure its sustainability and growth.

Develop and implement strategic plans in collaboration with the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers.

Represent Sustainable Renton as the primary spokesperson, building relationships with partners, community members, funders, and local governments.

Lead day-to-day operations while fostering a collaborative and mission-driven organizational culture.

Inspire a business-oriented, professional, and results-driven environment across the organization.

Program and Operational Management

Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of all programs, including food justice initiatives, sustainability education, and community engagement efforts.

Ensure programs align with the organization's mission and meet community needs.

Use performance metrics to analyze program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.

Motivate and mentor internal team leaders to strategically grow programmatic impact.

Fundraising and Development

Lead and oversee all fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor relations, sponsorship development, and event planning.

Build relationships with key funders, individual donors, and corporate sponsors to secure ongoing financial support.

Ensure financial sustainability by maintaining a healthy cash flow and cultivating new funding streams.

Financial Management and Adminstration

Oversee financial management, ensuring the organization operates within budget guidelines and maintains financial stability.

Build and administer the organization’s annual budget in collaboration with the Board of Directors.

Provide regular financial reports to ensure transparency in financial operations.

Prudently direct resources and manage financials to ensure optimal financial positioning for the organization.

Board and Community Relations

Collaborate with the Board of Directors to set strategic priorities, ensure good governance, and report on organizational progress.

Engage community stakeholders, partners, and volunteers to build support for Sustainable Renton’s mission.

Organize and lead Board meetings, presenting strategic options and gaining Board approval for new initiatives.

Staff and Volunteer Management

Recruit, hire, train, and supervise staff members, providing leadership and support for a high-performing team.

Foster a positive and inclusive work environment, ensuring staff and volunteers are motivated and aligned with the mission.

Oversee volunteer recruitment and retention strategies, cultivating a robust and engaged volunteer base.

Qualifications

Proven executive leadership experience within a nonprofit or mission-driven organization, ideally in the environmental or social justice sectors.

Demonstrated success in leading organization growth, fundraising, and building donor relationships.

Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets and overseeing operational functions.

Ability to lead diverse teams and foster a collaborative, mission-driven work culture.

Strong written, oral, and public speaking skills, with the ability to inspire and engage a broad range of stakeholders.

Passion for sustainability, food justice, and community-building.
