Title : Development and Communications Director - 37 hrs per week (avg)

Description of Work : The Development and Communications Director has development, public relations, management, and administrative duties. S/he has the primary responsibility for coordinating outreach efforts in the community and implementing the cultivation and fundraising plans of Senior PharmAssist.

All work is to be directed toward the agency mission: Senior PharmAssist promotes healthier living for older adults in Durham by helping them obtain and better manage needed medications, and by providing health education, Medicare insurance counseling, community referral and advocacy.

Typical Duties:

FUNDRAISING

Works with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to ensure necessary operating funds.

Engages the Board to set annual fundraising goals and then works with leadership to creatively execute the development strategies with individual donors, businesses, and community groups.

Works closely with the Chair of the Development Committee and Executive Director to ensure development strategies are effective.

Comfortable with asking individuals, businesses, and community groups for financial support and finding other ways for them to support the organization’s mission.

Assists the Executive Director with major grant applications and is the liaison with smaller foundation supporters.

Maintains appropriate relations with funding sources and assures compliance with funding source regulations, including workplace campaigns.

Researches and coordinates major donor solicitations from individuals, businesses, and community groups in support of our annual campaign and funding targets.

Helps coordinate special events, which may include a breakfast, anniversary celebration, house-gatherings, etc.

Maintains and expands our database of donors (Bloomerang), including the inventory and tracking systems for gifts and subsequent follow-up communications.

Coordinates direct mail solicitations with staff and volunteer support.

CULTIVATION, COMMUNICATIONS, and OUTREACH

Ensures consistent and regular donor cultivation so that current and potential partners are connected to our work through stories and reports that we share via numerous platforms (e-news, newsletters, social media, etc.).

Motivates and equips Board members and other solicitors to participate in our cultivation efforts.

Comfortable speaking publicly to groups about our work.

Supervises the work of the Outreach Associate to ensure that we are both proactive in disseminating messages to the public and specific audiences (providers, pharmacists, those living in senior housing, etc.) and that we also respond to requests from others about speaking engagements, health fairs, etc.

Works closely with the Outreach Associate to ensure we have a cadre of well-trained outreach volunteers.

MANAGEMENT and ADMINISTRATION

Works with Executive Director, Program Associate, and Bookkeeper to monitor contributions and expenses according to our bookkeeping procedures.

Supervises the work of two part-time individuals: the bookkeeping administrative support of the Program Associate and the dissemination efforts of the Outreach Associate.

Other duties or projects as assigned by the Executive Director.

Organizational Relationship :

The Development and Communications Director reports to the Executive Director. S/he is the primary staff liaison with the Development Committee.

Demonstrates maturity, good judgment, flexibility, and organizational ability.

Communicates effectively, in written and oral form, with diverse populations.

Maintains effective working relationships with staff and volunteers.

Qualifications :

Essential

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two to five years of direct fundraising experience.

Excellent speaking and writing skills.

Able to use personal vehicle for job-related activities.

An upbeat, can-do attitude that inspires others to engage.

Familiar with MS Office, including Excel.

Preferred

Experience using social media to reach the public.

Donor-software experience, e.g. Bloomerang.

Comfortable navigating SquareSpace, CANVA, Adobe InDesign, and email marketing platforms.

Familiar with basic concepts regarding planned giving.
