Founded in 1882, UCLA Lab School is a laboratory school serving 450 students ages 4 to 12 (PreK-6) in a diverse community. The mission of UCLA Lab School is to promote innovation and excellence in education through teaching, research and public engagement. UCLA Lab School offers an inclusive, inquiry-based curriculum that prepares children with the knowledge and skills they need to take an informed and responsible role in the world. The Lab School's research program brings top experts to the school community to explore promising ideas about what matters most in education for the benefit of children, educators and families at the Lab School and beyond.

Position Summary

The UCLA Lab School Director of Communications serves as a key part of the Lab School leadership team. This role is an active participant in the day-to-day operations of the institution, efficiently managing and ensuring coordination between Lab School events, IT operations, and Communications. This role serves as the organization's central communicator and is responsible for developing and executing a strategic communications plan and delivering impactful messaging to represent the school's unique mission, values, programs, and educational philosophy through a multimedia approach to Lab School's myriad constituents, including current families, staff, faculty, alumni, and campus partners, to affect positive change in areas such as admissions, operations, and development. As the head of the Communications Office, this position produces content that informs and increases engagement among internal and external stakeholders via verbal, print, digital, and social media communication methods, such as newsletters, updates, reports, events, and other messaging that supports the school's goals and priorities. Additionally, this role directly supervises Lab School's IT functions, including the IT Manager, to ensure that IT systems and processes efficiently support the organization, and Lab School's Program Coordinator.

Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of publications planning and management that integrates the principles of journalism and media relations with publications, internal communications and public relations. (Required)Demonstrated editorial experience and knowledge of journalistic style codes. Ability to edit and proofread a variety of technical and lay material for completeness, stylistic consistency, logic, and organization as well as spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors. (Required)Ability to design, layout, and produce professional publications and other highly visible materials such as brochures, newsletters, annual reports, etc. (Required)Demonstrated experience to plan and manage the production of several publications and various communications projects and to adjust schedules to meet changing priorities. (Required)Experience in graphic art layout and design including professional presentation using fonts, formatting, color, and images. (Required)Advanced working knowledge of Macintosh and PC computers and associated software including expert knowledge of desktop publishing, database management, graphics and word processing programs (InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, PageMaker, Microsoft Office, FileMaker, Excel). Skill in using advanced computer application features including stylesheets, graphs, and merge functions. (Required)Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain a close working relationship with the Principal, faculty, staff, students, volunteers and colleagues at the University. (Required)Skill in coordinating all aspects of publication production and procedure to take a manuscript from first draft to camera-ready copy, including photography, graphic design, printing, inventory and distribution. (Required)Skill to set priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities and simultaneously meet deadlines. (Required)Strong written and oral communication skills that demonstrate correct grammar usage, syntax and format to write and edit press materials for a lay audience and to write interesting feature articles for publications. (Required)Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions, carry out detailed oral and written instructions, and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. (Required)Demonstrated working knowledge of the meaning and usage of concepts and terms in elementary education and associated research field. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree and/or course work equivalent to a BS or BA degree in English, journalism, or an allied field or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Required)
