Department of NeurobiologySummary:The Research Scientist will be a highly motivated and skilled electrophysiologist to join a dynamic glia research lab. The primary responsibility will be to design and conduct independent research projects and write grants focused on the electrophysiological properties of glial cells and their role in neural circuits and behavior, electrical interfaces, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. The successful candidate will have a strong background in electrophysiology, preferably with experience in patch-clamp recordings from glial cells and neurons, and a demonstrated ability to conduct rigorous scientific research. Candidate is required to have experience in performing electrophysiology in MEA (Multielectrode Array) such as Axion and assist in the design of custom bioelectric sensors. The candidate is also expected to perform calcium imaging and other fluorescence microscopy techniques. An understanding in peptide bioengineering, neuroinflammation, and electron transfer would be helpful, but not necessary.Responsibilities:Independent Research:
Design, conduct, and analyze electrophysiological experiments on glial cells in vitro and/or in vivo and organoids. Experience in primary neural cultures would be advantageous.Develop and optimize experimental protocols for patch-clamp recordings, including whole-cell, single-channel, and field recordings.Analyze electrophysiological data using appropriate software and statistical methods.Interpret and present research findings at lab meetings, conferences, and in publications.
Collaboration:
Collaborate with other lab members on related research projects.Provide electrophysiological expertise and support to other researchers in the lab.Participate in the training and mentorship of junior lab members, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Lab Management:
Maintain and troubleshoot electrophysiology equipment.Order and manage laboratory supplies related to electrophysiology experiments.Adhere to all laboratory safety regulations and procedures.
Grant Writing and Publication:
Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals to secure funding for research projects.Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Other:
Attend relevant scientific conferences and workshops to stay abreast of current research in the field.Contribute to the overall intellectual environment of the lab.
Qualifications:Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Physiology, or a related field and at least one year of related experience required.Preferred Qualifications:Post-doctoral experience required.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Additional Desired Skills:Experience with optogenetics or other advanced techniques.Experience with electrophysiology modalities (Patch-clamp, MEA etc).Experience with calcium imaging and other fluorescent microscopy techniques.Experience in glial cell culture (mixed or specific glial cells e.g. microglia).Experience with drug discovery process in neurosciences.Experience with biosensors.Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB, Python).Track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.To Apply:Please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references to Brandy McClanahan at
