Geri R. Donenberg, Ph.D., has been appointed as the NIH Associate Director for AIDS Research and Director of the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR), effective this October.
She will lead and coordinate HIV/AIDS research across
NIH
institutes.Dr. Donenberg
has over 25 years of experience in HIV/AIDS research, focusing on HIV transmission and substance use among youth. Her work targets diverse populations, including minority adolescents, young adults in resource-limited settings, Black adolescent girls, young men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs.A clinical psychologist,
Dr. Donenberg
is currently a professor at the
University of Illinois Chicago (UIC),
where she directs the
Center for Dissemination and Implementation Science in Health Disparities and the Healthy Youths Program.She earned her B.A. from the
University of Michigan
and her M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from
UCLA . A former
Fulbright Scholar
in South Africa, she has authored over 170 publications and led numerous
NIH -funded studies linking adolescent mental health to HIV risk.Doctors and healthcare professionals have been congratulating Geri Donenberg:
