Under direction of the Scripps IT Director, this position supervises the team of System Administrators who manage the shore-based cyberinfrastructure platforms for Scripps Oceanography. This includes overseeing management of the servers and services that support the institution's core administrative functions, as well as those maintained under a recharge model in support of research activities. The resources managed by the position include physical and virtual servers running various versions of Linux and Windows, highly-available hypervisor and storage platforms, as well as a number of backup tools for macOS, Linux and Windows clients. Most of these are located in the SIO data center, but some resources are supported by equipment located at the San Diego Supercomputer Center or in cloud platforms. Collaborates with the Scripps IT Director with planning equipment purchases and managing the recharge facility.The position performs in-depth analyses and implements solutions for highly complex issues in a number of technical areas:Administration of servers running Windows and Linux;Management of hypervisor clusters running VMware and Proxmox;Administration of system management platforms such as Ansible and Intune;Management of storage clusters based on ZFS and Ceph;Configuration of web, file sharing, database and printing services;Integration of user accounts with centralized identity and access management platforms;Configuration of system security settings and host-based firewalls;Note that the responsibilities of this position are focused on Scripps IT's shore-based cyberinfrastructure platforms, but as needed, assists with ShipCIS projects.The position collaborates with technical staff from other units at SIO, the campus academic schools and ITS, to develop and implement infrastructure projects to improve both the service catalog and security compliance of Scripps Oceanography.As a supervisor, the position is responsible for managing personnel issues such as hiring and training new team members, resolving conflicts and applying disciplinary action, as well as providing information about relevant campus policies and procedures.QUALIFICATIONS
In-depth knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.Demonstrated ability to install, troubleshoot and administer Windows, macOS and Linux computers. Demonstrated ability to install, configure and manage typical services such as SMB, NFS, HTTP, SSH, RDP, SNMP and LPD. Knowledge of hypervisor clustering platforms such as Proxmox and VMware vSphere to run virtual Windows and Linux servers in support of a diverse userbase. Advanced knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Demonstrated experience with Linux management tools such as Ansible or Puppet to manage complex server platforms at scale. Demonstrated experience with clustered storage platforms such as Ceph or GPFS.General knowledge of other areas of IT. Experience working with and supporting computers running client OS versions of macOS, Linux and Windows.Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software. Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks. Knowledge of common intrusion detection and prevention tools at the network and host layers. Familiarity with GPOs, Intune or other MDM platforms to configure and monitor security settings.Has effective project management skill sets. Advanced knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Experience developing and implementing complex project plans using platforms such as JIRA or MS Project. Experience writing funding proposals and tracking budgets. Thorough knowledge of IP-based networking (TCP, UDP, ICMP). Knowledge of switch, router and firewall management using CIDR and VLAN configurations. Familiarity with VPN tunneling at the host and network levels. Knowledge of network troubleshooting tools such as ping and traceroute, and network activity monitoring tools such as Intermapper and Zabbix.Knowledge of test application code in client server environment. Demonstrated ability to write automation scripts using general purpose scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Powershell, or Linux shell scripts. Familiarity with source code revision tools such as Git. Demonstrated experience supporting the technology needs of academic research groups, including consulting with PIs, procuring new systems, and optimizing compute and storage servers to best meet their needs.SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Must pass a background check.Must be able to obtain a U.S. passport.Some evenings and weekends required to attend to critical system failures or to minimize service disruption for planned outages.Pay Transparency ActAnnual Full Pay Range: $104,900 - $198,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)Hourly Equivalent: $50.24 - $95.26Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
