General Manager, UAW Black Lake Conference Center & Golf Course

The UAW is seeking a General Manager for Black Lake Conference Center and Black Lake Golf Club. This position is responsible for overseeing all employees at the UAW’s historic movement and education center in Northern Michigan, as well as all maintenance and operations of the golf course and associated golf club. For nearly 50 years, Black Lake has been a destination for the UAW and aligned movement organizations to hold retreats, training thousands of rank-and-file activists in building worker power, and enjoying the beauty of Michigan’s natural landscapes. The General Manager ensures the grounds are kept in top condition, manages staff, handles budgeting and finances, and liaises with members or clients for events.

Key Responsibilities

Coordinate with other UAW Departments and aligned movement organizations to host conferences, retreats, and training sessions at Black Lake.

Hire Employees, including interviewing, evaluating, and working with HR to identify needs and hire key employees.

Arrange and oversee appropriate training to support staff needs.

Oversee Department Heads (Food and Beverage, Housekeeping, Reservations and Front Office, Human Resources, Accounting, Maintenance, Conference Services and Special Events, Security, Golf Course Maintenance, Black Lake Golf Club Pro Shop and Black Lake Grill Staff, etc.) on additional hiring to ensure adequate staffing.

Evaluate needs based on requests, review and update budgets, and provide updates as needed for the UAW upon request.

Ensure the Conference Center and Golf course are properly maintained, including well-manicured greens and general ground appearance.

Monitor all staff members in each area or receive regular reports from department heads and ensure adequate training and feedback is being provided.

Work with HR department to issue corrective behavior and ensure all appropriate rules are being followed.

Identify strategies to improve revenue and control costs.

Assist employees in handling events and guest concerns as well as large marketing events.

Oversee the budget provided and approved by the UAW International Executive Board to ensure strict adherence to the designated allocations identified.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

3-5 years Management experience, including extensive knowledge of resort operations and maintenance.

Strong leadership and management abilities.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Financial management and budgeting skills.

Extensive Hotel, Service, and Restaurant knowledge and experience.

Ability to develop and implement marketing strategies.

Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Customer service orientation and experience.

Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

Knowledge of health and safety regulations as pertains to conference center operations and golf course.

Strong organizational, multitasking, and time management skills.

Proficiency in budgeting and financial management.

Attention to detail and ability to maintain high standards.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Proven ability to work in a high-intensity and quickly changing environment.

High proficiency in developing plans and communicating them to staff.

Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities is a necessity.

Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.

Successful candidates will exhibit discerning judgment, exemplary people skills, and adept writing capabilities. The ideal candidate is both a team player who can collaborate with an enthusiastic staff and a self-driven individual versed at time and task management.

This is a full-time, exempt position based in Onaway, Michigan. The UAW offers a competitive salary along with best-in-class health, retirement, and paid time off benefits. Relocation may be available.
