THIS IS A NON-CIVIL SERVICE POSITIONPOSTING DATE: 09/05/2024CLOSING DATE: 12/05/2024 AT 12:00 MIDNIGHTSALARY RANGE: $99,053.00 - $163,237.00 USD AnnuallyCLASS DESCRIPTIONThe Baltimore City Department of Transportation (DOT) is hiring a Chief of Traffic. DOT is responsible for the planning, design, building and maintenance of 2,000 miles of roadways; 7 miles of interstate highways; 298 bridges and culverts; 3,600 miles of sidewalks, curbing and gutters; 456 miles of alleys; 72,000 streetlights; 1,300 signalized intersections; and 250,000 traffic and informational signs within the City of Baltimore. Mayor Brandon Scott has prioritized the implementation of Complete Streets. Accordingly, all Departmental activities will be focused on re-envisioning and altering public rights of way to better serve all neighborhoods and to ensure equitable investment across the City.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAuthorize installation of Traffic Control Devices including signals, signs and pavement markings. Operate and maintain the city’s 1,350 traffic signals.Conduct Traffic Studies.Coordinate with other departments on traffic analysis and mitigation related to planning studies and construction projects.Work with multi-disciplinary planning and design teams for roadway improvement projects, ITS projects, transportation safety projects, bicycle and pedestrian projects, and other transportation-related projects.Recruit and hire staff and oversee consultant resources.Manage the agency’s Transportation Safety Improvement Program.Manage the agency’s transportation management center.Conduct traffic policy research and analysis on a range of topics.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION:
Have a master’s degree from an accredited college or university.ANDEXPERIENCE:
Have five (5) years of experience managing engineering projects as a licensed professional engineer, certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer, and a minimum of three years directly supervising senior engineers, junior engineers and engineering technicians.ORNOTES (EQUIVALENCIES):
Have an equivalent combination of experience and/or education.This position reports directly to the Deputy Director and will have frequent contact with the Director of Transportation, the Mayor’s Office, and members of City Council. This is a benefited, at-will position serving at the pleasure of the Director of Transportation.
