Job Summary:
The Swine General Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of swine production, ensuring optimal performance in animal care, facility management, team leadership, and operational efficiency. This role is accountable for achieving key production, safety, and financial targets, ensuring the well-being of the livestock, and maintaining high morale and performance within the team. The Swine General Manager will lead a team to meet production goals, manage resources, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee Animal Health and Welfare:
Ensure the health, nutrition, and overall well-being of the swine herd by implementing and monitoring best practices in animal husbandry.
Manage the breeding, farrowing, and finishing processes to maximize production efficiency and animal health.
Oversee Facility Operations and Maintenance:
Ensure the smooth functionality of all swine facilities, including barns, feed systems, and equipment.
Minimize downtime by maintaining equipment and scheduling repairs and upgrades as needed.
Team Leadership and Morale:
Lead, coach, and develop the swine management team, ensuring team morale and effective communication.
Manage team schedules and ensure proper staffing for each shift to optimize productivity.
Maintain regular personal interaction with team members to foster strong relationships, provide feedback, and address concerns or challenges.
Resource Allocation:
Allocate resources, including feed, labor, and supplies, to meet daily production goals while managing costs.
Optimize resource use to maximize output and minimize waste.
Oversee Operational Efficiency:
Track and improve key production metrics, ensuring the operation runs efficiently and within budget.
Implement and refine processes to improve productivity and reduce waste.
Key Measures of Success:
Safety (Accidents/Near Misses):
Minimize workplace accidents and near misses by implementing strong safety protocols in partnership with the Safety Manager and ensuring employees complete required safety training.
Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR):
Monitor and improve the feed conversion ratio (FCR) to ensure swine are growing efficiently with minimal feed waste.
Pigs Weaned per Sow per Year (PSY):
Achieve or exceed targets for pigs weaned per sow per year, optimizing reproductive performance and animal health.
Mortality Rate:
Reduce mortality rates across all stages of production, ensuring that the swine herd is healthy and well-managed.
Labor Costs per Pound of Pork:
Optimize labor efficiency by monitoring labor costs relative to pork production, with a focus on reducing costs per pound of finished product.
Turnover:
Minimize employee turnover by fostering a positive and supportive work environment.
Breakdown Hours (Downtime):
Track and minimize breakdown hours, ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and that production interruptions are reduced.
Pounds of Pork per Man Hour:
Measure and increase the pounds of pork produced per man-hour worked, ensuring labor efficiency and productivity.
Meet Financial and Production Targets (Cost per Pound and Revenue):
Ensure that the operation meets or exceeds financial targets, focusing on production cost per pound and overall revenue generation.
