Over the next 5 years, UT-Dell Med will undergo a rapid scaling that includes opening a greenfield, tertiary academic hospital adjacent to MD Anderson’s new cancer center hospital; expand ambulatory facilities; recruiting over 300 physicians and advanced providers, and establishing the data and technology infrastructure to enable this transformation.

We are seeking applicants for Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to serve on the executive board of Dell Medical School at the University of Texas.

The Chief Administrative Officer, in partnership with the Dean of Dell Medical School & Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at the University of Texas, will be accountable for the performance of UT-Dell Med developing and executing required strategic and operating plans. The CAO will be expected to achieve the financial, quality, and growth objectives of the business. Alongside the Dean/SVPMA, he/she will successfully translate Dell Medical School’s integrated model of practice, education, and research into action by collaborating with mission-aligned community partners and with Dell Medical School’s executive vice dean, Vice President of the Health Enterprise, vice deans of practice, research and education, and chief executives of the shared services (IT, Finance, HR, Public Affairs, Development, Compliance, Legal) administration. The CAO will build the organizational structure and processes and extend the Dell Medical School culture to meet the high growth and performance expectations.

The CAO must be a respected executive with broad knowledge of health care and must exemplify Dell Medical School values (excellence, innovation, impact, collaboration, compassion, humility, and stewardship) in his/her behaviors inside and outside of University of Texas-Dell Med.

Purpose

The CAO is part of a matrixed reporting structure. Within Dell Medical School, the CAO reports to the Dean/SVPMA. He/she will serve as a member of the senior leadership team, the Dean’s cabinet, which has fiduciary oversight and shared responsibility for the overall performance and growth.

Responsibilities

Provides overall strategic and operating direction for UT-Dell Medical School including developing UT-Dell Med into a destination academic medical center in Austin.

Inspires talented individuals who share Dell Medical School values to join the organization and serve the needs of patients across the region and world.

Ensures alignment of critical resources and expands the roles of education and research to achieve a destination medical center.

Designs and executes the organization strategic growth plan and operations within the overall strategic plan.

Fosters relationships with external values-aligned organizations in the country (or region) and secures contractual partnerships.

Delivers financial and quality targets and operational goals of the academic medical center.

Manages legal and regulatory compliance of the organization business.

Sets priorities and achieves deliverables outlined by the 2024-2030 strategic plan.

Develops and implements the organizational structure, critical shared service functions, and leadership model required to successfully achieve the strategic and operating plan.

Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree required. Ten or more years of leadership experience. Demonstrated strategic thinking, keen judgment and planning skills; recognized commitment to and skill in working in and developing teams; demonstrated ability to achieve results and develop people; sound fiscal judgment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proven ability to successfully undertake and implement multiple initiatives simultaneously in a complex, matrix organization.

Broad knowledge of health care administration.

Experience and skills in health care operations, facility growth, financial management, marketing, strategic planning, negotiations, and organization development.

Established track record as a pioneer, innovator and ability to manage a high degree of ambiguity.

Well-developed planning, marketing, organizational development and business skills.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively in a collaborative matrix management environment.

Experience working in an academic medical environment with domain expertise in clinical, research, and education operations.

Proven ability to be agile, quickly accessing and responding to rapidly changing circumstances.
