Position Summary
The Director of Data Science is jointly responsible for enterprise data strategy in partnership with the Director of Data Engineering and leads the data science, business intelligence and Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) teams. The Director is responsible for driving value creation from JetBlue’s vast data assets. They are both a highly technical leader and a culture change-agent who directs teams of engineers, data scientists and developers while also influencing JetBlue teams to be more data-driven. The Director oversees a 50+ person team of internal crewmembers and external business partners that builds real-time data pipelines, integrates and curates data in the data warehouse, develops dashboards and reports, and creates data products leveraging machine learning algorithms. The Director reports into the Managing Director of IT Data and Analytics.
The Director will establish a presence, both internally and externally, that showcases JetBlue’s data and analytics capabilities. The Director also has responsibility for aligning data policy and administration with relevant regulatory, legal and ethical mandates. The Director can change priorities and focus to meet business demands, excels when working on complex projects, is motivated to deliver results, and exhibits the JetBlue values of Safety, Caring, Integrity, Passion, and Fun.
Define and execute the overarching data and analytics strategy for JetBlue, which must be influenced by the needs of various business units across the company
Provide strategic and technical leadership in the form of systems design, engineering best practices, and skills development for a large technical team
Design and continually innovate a real-time data architecture, and ensure streaming data pipelines satisfy the needs of large scale systems operations application implementation and customer needs
Jointly oversee the modern analytic data stack for JetBlue
Partner with senior leadership to align data engineering initiatives with overall business strategy.
Oversee and guide the strategic vision of JetBlue’s Business Intelligence and Enablement programs
Control and evolve JetBlue’s data literacy and data enablement program, which encourages other teams across JetBlue better leverage data and analytics
Manage relationships with external vendors and partners to ensure seamless integration of third-party data tools
Oversee data science leaders and initiatives in commercial and operations, which are focused on building data products to support revenue efforts (pricing, forecasting), customer experience and personalization (customer lifetime value, attrition, recommendation engines), and system operations reliability
Participate on the IT Leadership Team to drive the overall direction of the department
Take a significant role in the development of crewmembers to support their engagement, growth, and goal achievement

Minimum Experience and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a quantitative discipline; OR demonstrated capability to perform job responsibilities with a combination of a High School Diploma/GED and at least four (4) years of previous relevant work experience
Seven (7) years of experience in data engineering and data science
Five (5) years of previous leadership experience
Proficiency in Python, SQL, git and common data science and machine learning libraries
Deep expertise in data warehousing and the modern data stack
Available for overnight travel (10%)
Must pass a pre-employment drug test
Must be legally eligible to work in the country in which the position is located
Authorization to work in the US is required. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
Ten (10) years of experience in data analysis algorithms (data mining, statistics, machine learning, natural language processing, text mining)
Experience managing in an airline, travel industry and/or operations environment, including working knowledge of systems applicable to their business area
Regular attendance and punctuality
Potential need to work flexible hours and be available to respond on short-notice.
Able to maintain a professional appearance

Responsible for adhering to all applicable laws, regulations (FAA, OSHA, DOT, etc.) and Company policies, procedures and risk controls
Uphold JetBlue’s safety performance metric goals and understand how they relate to their duties and responsibilities

Compensation:
The base pay range for this position is between $165,000.00 and $250,000.00 per year. Base pay is one component of JetBlue’s total compensation package, which may also include performance bonuses, restricted stock units, as well as access to healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan and company match, crewmember stock purchase plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, free space available travel on JetBlue, and more.
