The Director and Chief Curator will be an engaged and visionary leader with significant museum experience to provide strategic and collaborative leadership for the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston School of the Arts. The Director and Chief Curator is responsible for shaping the Institute’s mission and profile. This position is the Chief Curator of the Institute and leads the efforts to present all exhibitions and programs in a successful and professional manner. The Director and Chief Curator has primary responsibility for all aspects of the Institute’s operation and management, including fiscal and personnel management, as well as for raising funds to support the Institute.Minimum Qualifications:
Undergraduate Degree in Art History, Arts Management, Museums Studies, or Studio Art. Advanced degree preferred. Five years of senior curatorial and administrative experience in a museum or gallery managing and curating contemporary art exhibitions. Professional experience in higher education or non-profit environment preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Background in Art History, Arts Management, Museums Studies, or Studio Art. Extensive experience with exhibition planning, design, and installation, with an emphasis on contemporary art. Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for art museums and galleries. Record of success in donor relations, fundraising, and grant-writing. Demonstrated knowledge of professional colleagues in the museum field.Additional Comments Regarding Position:
Attend events and programs presented by the Halsey Institute. Frequent evening and weekend events.Essential Responsibilities:
Operations and Planning:
Oversee day-to-day operations. Develop and manage the Institute’s operating budget. Supervise Institute employees and determine staffing. Lead visioning, long-term, and strategic planning to accomplish the Institute’s mission. Work closely with the Institute Advisory Board to advance the Institute’s goals.Curatorial:
Foster the institutional vision and artistic direction for the Institute. Lead exhibition development with the Director of Exhibitions from concept to implementation and collaborate with Institute staff on related programming and publications. Maintain and further develop a wide network of contemporary artists and curators. Communicate the Institute’s role as an outstanding visual arts institution, enhancing its reputation and affiliations as a public art museum regionally and nationally.Fundraising and External Support:
Serve as the primary ambassador for the Institute. Provide leadership and collaborate with the Institute Director of Development and the College of Charleston Foundation to identify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors to build a philanthropic base of support for the Institute. Assist the Director of Development in identifying and securing appropriate grants and other external funding sources.Academic Collaboration:
Support and develop the Institute’s critical role as a teaching resource for the College of Charleston community. Support Institute staff and College faculty in the development of opportunities to enhance teaching and learning via the Institute’s exhibitions and programming. Work collaboratively with the School of the Arts Dean to establish a shared vision between the College and the Institute.External Collaboration:
Develop partnerships with peer institutions. Cultivate local, regional, and national connections with scholars, museum colleagues, and other organizations to promote greater visibility for the Institute and College of Charleston. Engage in the regional arts community.Supplemental Questions
