Primary Function/General Purpose of PositionReporting to the Sr. Director of Development, the Major Gifts Director will have primary responsibility to raise philanthropic support from major gift and prospective donors. The position also requires the identification and relationship cultivation on new prospective donors. The Major Gift Director will focus on building relationships with donors and prospects with a capacity of $100,000 to $5,000,000. Additionally, the position is expected to make at least three $1M+ solicitations per year. The Major Gift Director will be a key player in the execution of a successful grateful patient program and will work closely with physicians as assigned by the Sr. Director of Development and approved by the Foundation President.

The Major Gifts Director will build and manage an active portfolio of 50–125 prospective and current donors. With the support of the Sr. Director of Development and the Strategic Research and Analytics Director, the Major Gifts Director will follow a strategy for identification, qualification, and relationship-building to close and steward major gifts of $100,000 and above, while actively soliciting corporate sponsorships for the annual gala. An annual gala sponsorship goal will be set each year and is in addition to individual giving goals.

Major Gift Directors are expected to close at least $500K in the first year; $1M in the second year; and $3M+ per year in years three and four. A goal of $5M+ per year after year four is expected.

The Major Gift Director will develop a prospect pipeline through visits, events, correspondence, and regular calls as required for donors in the portfolio. The position calls for exemplary interpersonal skills, the ability to create strategic and donor-centric proposal concepts; and the ability to maintain excellent relationships with donors and top administrators while representing the mission of the organization with the utmost professionalism, trustworthiness, and commitment.

Essential Job Functions

Build and carry an active portfolio of 50–125 prospective donors and active donors; implement strategies for identification, qualification, and relationship-building to close and steward gifts of $100,000 and above; develop a prospect pipeline through visits, events, correspondence, and regular calls as required for donors in the portfolio; maintain excellent relationships with donors, physicians, and top administrators.

Working with team mates, help to lead proposal development. Work in partnership with physicians to staff and conceptualize, prepare, and present funding proposals and other materials necessary to solicit and close gifts, including those requiring negotiations and complex gift agreement and payout strategies. Assist with case statement development, talking points, proposals, and briefing materials for these activities. Advise and involve leaders in fundraising strategies and the development of fundable opportunities consistent with RSFH priorities. Staff and meet regularly with select physicians and CAOs in the dyad model to funding opportunities for short-term needs and long-term vision. Stay up to date on RSFH funding needs.

Advance grateful patient relationships through partnerships with RSFH leadership, physician, and clinical care teams cultivate relationships in a donor-centric manner where the needs and interests of the patient are always at the forefront.

Work Experience

Three years of successful major gifts fundraising experience including the successful closure of multiple six-figure gifts (preferred)

SkillsHard/Tech/Clinical Skills:

Demonstrated excellence in oral and written skills.

Ability to attend to detail and ensure accuracy of data.

Demonstrated ability to use personal computers and various word processing and spreadsheet software applications.

Effective organizational, planning, communication, attention to detail and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge software systems (including RENXT and Research Point).

May be required to set up and attend Foundation events outside of normal working hours.

Soft/Interpersonal Skills:

Ability to work independently, but also function as part of a team and contribute to the goals of the full team.
