Senior Paralegal

to assist in the work of the Civil Rights Division, U.S. Department of Justice

This position is a “hybrid” position with selected candidate reporting in-office/on-site a minimum of two (2) days a week. Travel may be required, with prior notice and authorization, up to 15% of work operations.

Pay Rate Information

This is a temporary to permanent hire Service Contract Act position with an hourly pay rate of $35.05 that includes a Health and Welfare Benefit of $4.57 an hour.

Service Contract Act, or SCA, position pay rates are determined by the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division. More information is available at

Upon completion of six (6) months of employment, the selected candidate can expect an annual salary as a permanent full-time employee with the federal contractor.

Period of Performance:

(Tentative) This position is a “hybrid” position with selected candidate reporting in-office/on-site a minimum of two (2) days a week. Travel may be required, with prior notice and authorization, up to 15% of work operations.

Current contract period: Date of Hire through May 31, 2024 - with the potential for annual extensions through May 31, 2027.

Normal Work Hours of Operation:

Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week, two (2) 15-minute breaks and 30-minute lunch, except for federal holidays, unless otherwise stated.

A favorable Public Trust Suitability Determination investigation is required for the position and requested on a conditional offer of employment.

Qualifications:

Requires Paralegal Certificate or Juris Doctorate.

Minimum two (2) years of Litigation Paralegal experience required; trial experience extremely helpful.

One (1) year of experience in Automated Litigation Support, e-Discovery Litigation Support, and Technology.

Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as Lexis Nexis and Westlaw.

Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.

Role also requires hands-on familiarity with Electronically Stored Information, ESI, tools and knowledge of e-Discovery procedures and resources i.e., Electronic Discovery Reference Model, EDRM.

Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

Must be a US Citizen.

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust favorable suitability determination.

e-Discovery Litigation Support

Responsibilities/Duties:

Works under the direction of a Supervisory Paralegal. Work products are reviewed prior to submission; however, a Senior Paralegal often develops these products with minimal direct supervision other than written guidelines.

Performs moderately complex legal research; synopsizes transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use.

Reviews case related materials and identifies potentially conflicting statements or areas requiring further investigation.

Writes preliminary drafts of simple legal memoranda and correspondence.

Conducts database reviews in Relativity (including coding/redacting/saved searches/mass tagging); generates privilege logs; generates productions; communicates with opposing counsel.

Burns productions to disc or uploads to encrypted box account.

Generates witness binders; supports onsite trial; interviewing aggrieved persons and reviewing documents for FOIA in Relativity.

Provides legal and technical services to support the Department of Justice, to include but not limited to: forensically capturing, reviewing evidence, from emails and instant messages to electronic devices, and social media systems.

Time and task management, critical thinking, and problem solving.

The ability to communicate complicated problems in a concise manner, as well as solve complex problems using available tools.
