The NASWSI Director leads the development and operation of the Institute and reports to and works in collaboration with the Dean, Facundo Valdez School of Social Work (FVSSW). The Director performs a wide-range of duties which include program planning and development for the Institute, and oversight and management of its programs. The Director will be responsible for shaping the direction of the Institute, development of staffing, and identifying internal (NMHU and the School of Social Work) and external stakeholders and constituents who can contribute to the success of the Institute. Program development will include the creation of a clinical practice concentration (curriculum and faculty development), and research and policy components related to federal, state, and tribal legislation especially as regards family and children’s services within tribal jurisdictions. The Director works closely with tribal governments and program personnel to assure integrity of all components of the Institute.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leads the development and long-range planning of the NASWSI within the Facundo Valdez School of Social Work and manages its daily operations.
Facilitates the creation of an Advisory Board for the Institute which will provide support, expertise, and assist in shaping the overall direction of the Institute.
Collaborates with tribal leadership, community practitioners, and School of Social Work faculty, to identify specific areas of focus for the work of the Institute.
Collaborates and works closely with Field Education at FVSSW in the development of field practicum sites serving tribal communities.
Works closely with tribal representatives and School faculty to increase and integrate Native content into current social work curriculum.
Develops and implements a process for the recruitment and support of Native faculty and staff. Mentors faculty hired to teach classes on behalf of the Institute.
Supervises all staff of the Institute, including professional and para-professional, and student workers.
Provides oversight and works closely with tribal representatives and School of Social Work faculty in the development of the Native American Clinical Practice Concentration.
Creates leadership and learning opportunities for students of the Facundo Valdez School of Social Work.
Explores and facilitates the use of online technologies to further the Institute’s programs and initiatives.
Explores indigenous research methodology and evaluation of existing initiatives and programs by tribal program personnel.
Introduces and facilitates the use of indigenous research methodologies by tribal programs which will inform content of curriculum.
Works jointly with NM CYFD and other relevant agencies/organizations to identify intersections of service where custom-informed interventions can be introduced that strengthen family systems.
Collaborates with NM CYFD to design and implement research regarding vulnerable Native populations, such as homeless Native youth, and explores the foster care to prison/poverty pipeline.
Provides leadership that encourages and facilitates colleague-ship and collaboration between the Institute, tribal program personnel and faculty/staff of the FVSSW.
Collaborates and maintains association with the University of New Mexico Native American Budget Analysis Institute to design and develop course offerings that address social work services in state public schools in response to Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico.
Develops and maintains a quarterly NASWSI Newsletter to inform tribal leadership, tribal program personnel, NM Legislature and collaborative partners regarding the work of the Institute.
Advocates for the work of the Institute with the NM Legislature and national organizations and agencies.
Participates in national/state professional and interdisciplinary organizations and task forces to assure the inclusion of the Native voice in proposed initiatives related to research and program planning.
Explores local, state, and federal funding opportunities to support and develop the Institute’s programs, mission and goals.
Explores the possibility of expansion of the Institute’s programs nationwide (dependent on additional funding).
Collaborates with other Special Projects Directors and staff members, faculty members, and community stakeholders.
Leads initiatives to enhance the school of social work and contributes to the development of academic, research, policy and community efforts to bridge community needs and school resources.
Other tasks and activities as needed to fulfill the university, school, and institute missions and goals.
Minimum Job RequirementsMaster of Social Work (MSW) or a related Master’s degree
At least 5 years of social work practice in Native communities
At least 5 years of administrative/leadership experience in positions such as program director, program coordinator, project lead, principal investigator, etc.
Demonstrated capacity to successfully manage and oversee several program components simultaneously.
Demonstrated success and capacity to work collaboratively with tribal governments and programs.
Demonstrated success with establishing and maintaining collaborative connections with tribal, local, state and/or national agencies and organizations.
Knowledge and experience with jurisdictional issues of tribal/federal/state governments related to ICWA/social work practice in Native communities.
Demonstrated participation and involvement with tribal and community organizations to maintain a dialogue and be informed of needs related to Native social work education.
Demonstrated ability to manage grant budget, goals, deliverables and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in social work or related discipline
Native American tribal enrollment and/or lineage
At least 8-10 years of social work practice experience in Native communities.
At least 8-10 years of administrative/leadership experience
Teaching and/or field education experience in a school/department of social work
Special Conditions for Eligibility
Must possess a valid New Mexico drivers’ license.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the history and contemporary life ways of the Apache, Pueblo, and Diné peoples in New Mexico.
Knowledge of the social work education and practice needs of tribal communities in New Mexico.
Ability to create and sustain successful professional, collaborative, and positive relationships across diverse groups of constituents.
Ability to successfully engage in complex problem-solving using collaborative methods.
Ability to work with state legislators and officials, as well as NMHU personnel to secure and maintain funding for the NASWSI.
Ability to raise funds for NASWSI from local, state and federal sources.
Excellent speaking and writing skills.
