The Director of Field Education is a leadership position, responsible for the overall planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the undergraduate and graduate field placement and CYFD stipend programs for the Facundo Valdez School of Social Work to include program sites in Las Vegas (main campus), Santa Fe, Albuquerque/Rio Rancho, and Farmington and more than 500 community agencies and organizations across the state. The position requires presence in at least one (1) of the school sites and make periodic visits to all the sites. The Director of Field Education works under the direct supervision of the Dean.
Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive field placement program for undergraduate (BSW) and graduate (MSW) students at all seven (7) program locations;
Oversee and supervise Field Coordinators at all program sites to recruit, evaluate, approve contracts and retain and develop field practicum agencies responsive to the School’s mission;
Develop a systematic process for evaluating field practicum sites and implementing quality control measures for those needing improvement, to minimize liability risks and ensure high quality education experiences;
Oversee and supervise Field Coordinators at all program sites to terminate agency agreements with the School as needed;
Oversee and supervise Field Coordinators at all program sites to develop and implement a recruitment and field placement effort in the Pueblos and community based agencies serving Native American and Hispanic populations;
Ensure field teams at all program sites are maximizing the use technology to facilitate efficient communication with field staff and community agencies, including Zoom (videoconferencing);
Develop, implement and utilize online/electronic tools and resources to streamline processes (such as field orientations/trainings) across all NMHU locations and increase efficiency for students, agency instructors, field consultants and seminar instructors; develop and implement a plan for digitization of field forms;
Identify and develop funding opportunities to enhance field education and placement options;
Work with School faculty to ensure field courses are well-integrated into the School’s curriculum; develop and update syllabi for field practicum courses; incorporate best practices in all aspects of field education;
Create field policy, update policy manual and field forms and materials, and modify/recommend changes in policy;
Chair the Field Policy Committee, comprised of Field Coordinators, faculty member(s) and community member;
Supervise Field Education Administrative Assistant, graduate assistants and work study student workers;
Work closely with Field Advisory Committee, comprised of Field Instructors, Field Consultants, faculty and students/former grads;
Provide reports to the Dean each semester, including progress and status of field practicum agencies at all sites, and problems encountered in the field placement program;
Participate at the University-level regarding student issues that may arise;
Ensure compliance with CSWE field education accreditation standards;
Complete and submit in a timely manner required reports, including, but not limited to, CSWE surveys, liability insurance renewal;
Participate as a standing member of the School’s Curriculum Committee; solicit feedback from Curriculum Committee on changes to field education program;
Oversee field seminar curriculum; submits for approval changes to field seminar to Curriculum Committee;
Oversee the scheduling of field practicum and field practicum seminar courses and monitor enrollment prior to the start of the semester at all locations;
Serve as part of Executive Management team for the Facundo Valdez School of Social Work, together with Program Coordinators;
Oversee recruitment efforts of Title IV CYFD stipend students;
Respond promptly to inquiries received through email and voicemails;
Perform other field related duties as assigned by the Dean.
Maintain regular attendance.
Other duties assigned as needed.
Minimum Job Requirements
Education: Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE accredited program
Experience: Five (5) years post MSW experience, at least two of these in an administrative/leadership position
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a social work education setting
Experience as a field consultant
Experience as a field coordinator
Eight (8) years post MSW experience
LCSW or LISW licensure in the State of New Mexico
Special Conditions for Eligibility
Must be willing to work overtime, evenings, weekends or extended hours as required.
Must possess and maintain a valid NM Driver’s license.
Employment is contingent upon grant funding.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Leadership skills in a social work field education setting
Knowledge of healthcare, social services, child welfare and mental health agencies in the state.
Ability to work collaboratively with multiple constituents, including representatives of community agencies, students, field consultants, faculty and agency instructors in a team approach in the implementation of the field placement program.
Ability to work collaboratively with multiple offices at the University-level
Ability to problem-solve and resolve conflicts;
Ability to utilize electronic and online methods of communicating across distances;
Knowledge, understanding and the ability to work with Hispanic, Native American and other ethnic minority students, community based agencies providing services to these populations.
Physical Demands
Repetitive hand motions and prolonged use of computer.
Must occasionally lift and/or move up to forty (40) pounds.
Sitting for extended periods of time.
Kneel, bend and stoop.
Working Environment
Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
Work with frequent interruptions.
