The Duke Department of Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center seeks a Director of Research. Ideal candidates will have an MD/DO degree and demonstrated commitment towards research, education, or clinical service. Additional degrees such as MPH, MS, or PhD are preferred but not required. A mid-career researcher at Associate Professor or higher level is preferred. Significant prior experience includes but is not limited to clinical research experience, grant and manuscript preparation, and mentoring. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, leadership and interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and sponsors are essential.

The Director of Research will have their primary academic appointment in the Duke Department of Pediatrics and will contribute to the department’s vision to advance science, training, and clinical service delivery across the Duke School of Medicine and the Duke Health System (DHS). To accomplish this vision, they will develop their portfolio across all three missions (research, education & training, clinical) as appropriate, and are expected to actively collaborate with investigators, educators, and clinicians across the organization.

Responsibilities:

The Director will promote and participate in methodological and applied clinical research.

The Director will have the necessary skills to conduct or oversee their proposed research, including an understanding of any regulatory requirements for data management, handling, analyses, and reporting.

The Director is expected to come with significant funding and apply for and win intra- and extra-mural funding, including awards driven primarily by the faculty, as well as collaborative awards with others across the SOM.

The Director is also expected to present the results of their research work both internally and externally and submit it for publication to peer-reviewed journals. It is expected that liaising will result in productive scientific collaborations as evidenced by joint presentations and publications, grant applications, and other academic output.

The Director will provide clinical services in the Duke University Hospital Emergency Department.
