Job Description

The Door was established in 1972 with the vision of creating an innovative youth development model to address the complex needs of young New Yorkers. Today, we serve up to 11,000 youth annually across our four New York City locations, including our lower Manhattan and South Bronx youth centers and two supportive housing sites on the Lower East Side. The Door's success lies in our commitment to meeting young people where they are and providing them with the comprehensive and integrated services they need to reach their potential. At The Door, youth can access health care and education, mental health counseling and crisis intervention, legal assistance, high school equivalency and college preparation services, career development, housing support, arts, sports and recreational activities, and nutritious meals—all for free and in a diverse, caring, and supportive environment.

Broome Street Academy (BSA), a charter high school embedded at The Door, enrolls up to 330 students and prioritizes applicants who are experiencing housing instability or have been involved in the child welfare system. The wraparound supports provided in partnership with The Door promote student success in school and in life.

Position Overview:

The Door's Development and Communications Department is looking for an entrepreneurial and mission-driven full-time Director of Individual and Leadership Giving to join our dynamic 13-person team. This position reports to the Chief Advancement Officer and will be a key member of the Development and Communications leadership team, responsible for all fundraising, marketing, and communications functions within the organization. Other team leadership includes the Director of Events and Partnerships, the Managing Director of Institutional Giving, and the Managing Director of Communications and Marketing.

The Director will oversee The Door's major gift and annual giving programs, as well as managing a portfolio of ~75 individual donors and family foundations giving between $2,500-$50,000 annually. The Director must be able to think innovatively and creatively to acquire new donors, steward and cultivate key funding relationships with major donors, and drive new donors and new revenue to The Door. They should be technologically savvy, have experience overseeing a moves management system, have strong writing and communications skills, and should be adept at personally developing long-term relationships with donors. The Director will work in close partnership with other members of senior leadership and board members and will supervise 2 full-time staff: a Development Manager, responsible for overseeing database management, operations, direct mail, and donor communications; and an Associate, responsible for supporting with scheduling, donor communications, data entry, and a variety of administrative tasks.

The candidate must be flexible and capable of thriving in a high-energy and fast-paced environment. They must be extremely well organized, attentive to detail, and possess an upbeat, positive outlook. To succeed, the applicant must be resourceful, solution-oriented, capable of thinking and working independently, and have excellent communications and technical skills.

Responsibilities:

Build and manage a strong major donor portfolio and move management system by developing and maintaining key long-term relationships with funders through consistent personal outreach and accurate, timely reporting.

Make direct, face-to-face, and virtual visits, and manage donor and prospect engagement activities that align with donor giving interests.

Support the Chief Advancement Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and other Door leadership to participate in donor meetings, make donor presentations, deliver proposals, send ongoing communications, and negotiate with donors during asks.

Direct all prospect identification and qualification strategies and processes, including using available resources to create and present comprehensive donor prospect profiles.

Oversee the planning, strategy, and execution of all annual giving for The Door, including direct mail, campaigns, peer-to-peer fundraising, and other initiatives.

Develop close, productive relationships with key Board and Advisory Committee members, donors, corporate supporters, and Door staff, with a focus on engaging external stakeholders to leverage their personal and corporate contacts to benefit The Door.

Oversee the creation and conceptualization of donor-facing campaigns, marketing, and solicitation materials.

Oversee the management of the organization's data management processes and reporting.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 5 years experience working with major donors and board members.

Bachelor's degree required.

An experienced people manager who is a strong contributor within team environments and a driver of team culture.

A people person with strong relationship-building skills and the ability to develop rapport with various types of people.

Polished, professional, and comfortable liaising with donors and other VIPs, including strong principal management skills.

Excellent communication and writing skills with the ability to persuasively articulate the mission, program objectives, impact, and funding needs for The Door and Broome Street Academy.

Flexibility, efficiency, enthusiasm, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team effort.

Demonstrated independent judgment, creative thinking, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills.

Impeccable attention to detail.

Proficiency in MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and data processing.

Experience with Raisers Edge or similar fundraising database.

Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and committed to raising awareness and funds for The Door and Broome Street Academy.

Work Schedule:

Full time, Monday - Friday, 35 hours per week, with the option of hybrid work 1-2 days a week available. Some evening hours are required.

Compensation:

$100,000-$120,000 commensurate with experience, plus a generous benefits package.
