The Office of Legislative Counsel is seeking two additional attorneys to join our collaborative team. Both attorneys will handle a variety of subjects. One portfolio will include matters related to agriculture, energy, land use, forestry, and fish & wildlife, among others. The other portfolio will include issues related to housing, commerce, consumer protection, pensions, and retirement, among others.
Attorneys will provide legal research and analysis, legislative drafting, policy analysis, and other legal services to the Vermont General Assembly, and will testify frequently before legislative committees. The Office of Legislative Counsel is a nonpartisan office that provides legal support to all members of the General Assembly, regardless of party or political affiliation. Legislative Counsel is a small team with an important mission, and the work is challenging, dynamic, and exciting. You will be part of a highly professional and collegial team dedicated to serving the Vermont General Assembly.
Required Education and Experience:
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or successful completion of a recognized law office study program
Licensed to practice law in the State of Vermont or, if licensed outside Vermont, admission to the Vermont Bar within a reasonable time
A minimum of 3-5 years professional legal experience
Required Skills:
Strong research, analysis, and writing skills
Good interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to perform at the highest level under pressure
Strong work ethic
Ability always to remain professional and impartial while working in a political environment
Preferred Skills:
Experience in one or more of the subject areas listed above or in legislative drafting, or both, is preferred but not required
Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. The comprehensive State benefits package includes health insurance and retirement plans.
