The Lansing School District serves over 10,000 PreK-12 students across 25 school buildings in the increasingly diverse urban community of Lansing, MI. All of Lansing School District’s team members are dedicated to our mission to provide an excellent education to all students in a safe and nurturing environment.The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will serve as a key member of the Deputy Superintendent of Schools leadership team, driving efforts to cultivate an inclusive educational environment for a diverse student body in an urban school district. This leader will champion diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, working collaboratively with district leadership, schools, and the community to create policies and practices that promote access and equity for all students. The Director will lead various committees to address the district’s goals around DEI and serve as a key member of the District’s Consultation Team to ensure the effective implementation of DEI initiatives across all schools and programs.
Qualifications - Education
Master's degree in education or a related field.Qualifications - Experience
Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in school or program administration, preferably within an urban district or diverse educational setting.Experience working in an urban district with a diverse student population.Experience leading diverse teams, managing programs, and implementing policy changes at the District level.Qualifications - Skills & Knowledge
Demonstrated commitment to fostering equity and inclusion in a school or district context.Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.Strong knowledge of culturally responsive teaching, restorative practices, and equity-driven instructional leadership.Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations governing diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.Sample Job Responsibilities
Develop and Implement DEI Strategy : Formulate and execute district-wide strategies that advance equity and inclusion, aligned with the district’s mission and vision.Lead Committees : Chair and facilitate DEI-focused committees across the district, including school-based and community engagement committees, to ensure goals and initiatives are met.Serve on the District’s Consultation Team : Collaborate with district leaders as a member of the Consultation Team to provide input and guidance on district-wide decisions, policies, and initiatives with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.Professional Development : Design and deliver professional development and training opportunities to equip educators and staff with the skills needed to address equity and diversity in the classroom.Policy Development : Collaborate with district leaders on the development and implementation of equitable policies, programs, and practices that address systemic disparities.Collaboration : Work closely with school principals, central office leaders, and community stakeholders to support inclusive practices that improve student outcomes and build an equitable educational environment.Program Evaluation : Assess current programs and initiatives to determine effectiveness and areas for improvement, using data-driven approaches to guide decision-making.Compliance and Reporting : Ensure compliance with relevant federal, state, and local regulations related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and prepare reports for district leadership and the Board of Education.Track and Analyze Student Discipline Data : Monitor and analyze data related to student discipline, including suspension rates, office referrals, and disparities in disciplinary actions across different student demographics, to identify trends and implement strategies that promote equitable disciplinary practices.Community Engagement : Build and strengthen partnerships with community organizations, parents, and external stakeholders to support the district’s DEI goals.
